I’ve been using acrylic markers a lot these days, here’s why!

Hi friends! Do you ever find yourself reaching for a supply, not because it’s your favorite but because it’s just so darn handy? That’s how I have been feeling about acrylic markers. I always have a stash of paint pens in the cubby under my desk, ready to make an appearance as a final detail or if I want to decorate a non-pourous service. I don’t even think about them; they are just easy to grab! So today I decided to create some art with them on purpose in a sketchbook, and it was a blast!

Many companies are making acrylic markers now so they are easy to find and affordable. You can find them in a variety of nib types (my favorite are brush tip as they are gentle on paper and feel like using a paintbrush), from fine to wide, so you are sure to find a marker that fits your needs. My favorite thing about them is how they cooperate with nearly all of the other media I like to use! So let’s raise a glass to the unsung workhorse of the studio, the acrylic paint marker, and let’s make some art!

I do want to warn you about using fineliners over acrylic paint pens. Be sure to use a waterproof brand and let them dry completely. I hope you enjoyed this project, and til next time, happy crafting!

-JoanneClark

I’m halfway through the course and loving it! Lindsay is an awesome teacher! Each project is broken down into easy and understandable lessons. You go as slow or as fast as you wish. And you can do it over again! And when you’re done with each painting, you can post it, you can ask questions along the way, and you get wonderful feedback and help each step of the way. I can’t recommend taking this course enough.

Sat Chat: A Frugal Flat File!

Hi friends! Last week, my mom found me a map cabinet for $25 at a public auction. I painted it up, and I will show it to you in this week’s Sat Chat!

Stuff I mentioned in the chat:

I posted some still shots of my flat files as well as my plants on Instagram if you want to see them. I just put the plant on the deck for some sun, and I think I will join them! Happy crafting!

Make these mini frames for pennies using stuff you probably have!

Hi friends, I have been having a ball making tiny paintings and ATC/ACEOs, which are the size of a baseball card, and I wanted a way to display them. I know you can put them in a baseball card holder or sleeve and call it a day, but I wanted to be fancy. Fancy but FRUGAL, so I came up with an idea!

These are affordable and rather addictive to make. There was a bit of trial and error coming up with the technique, but now that I have the process down, I will show you how in today’s video!

Tips!

  • If you have hot-glue strings, you can dissolve them with a quick blast from a heat gun. Some crafters swear that storing their glue sticks in the freezer reduces stringing, and I will say I got fewer strings crafting in my cool basement.
  • Silicone tools (like nail tools or a silicone spatula) are great for smoothing uneven areas or wiping away extra hot glue.
  • You can use scissors to trim excess glue off the frame once it is cool.
  • Any extra clear hot glue can be used in a hot glue pot if you have one, making this as waste-free as you want to be!
  • Since we are using a high-temperature hot glue gun, the making of the frames is not a craft for small children, but they can have fun painting and decorating the finished shapes!
  • It might take a frame or two to find your groove. Be patient with yourself and have fun!

Happy crafting!
