Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Starred Review. Grade 9 Up—This specialized resource is well organized and clear, and will help students comprehend the tough and often impossible position that American Indians have faced when dealing with the U.S. and Canadian governments. It presents an objective view of how those governments used unfair treaties and deceitful treaty-making procedures to their advantage. The one- to two-page entries, some accompanied by black-and-white photographs or drawings, also explain how current tribal governments use the agreements to require federal governments to honor Indian rights. Related court cases and legislative activity are included. Volume one includes a helpful comparison of how Native American views on treaty making differed from those of the U.S. government; other thematic essays deal with property, water, hunting, and fishing rights; and a chronological review of contracts. The second volume contains information on 413 accords, beginning with the 1684 Treaty of Albany with the Five Nations and ending with the 1999 Nisga'a Final Agreement with the government of Canada. The last volume offers biographies and entries on treaty-related issues such as sovereignty, Indian removal, the Indian New Deal, and nonrecognized tribes. Each volume provides a list of alternate tribal names and spellings, tribal name meanings, treaties by tribe, common treaty names, and a selected bibliography.—Madeleine G. Wright, Laconia High School, NH

From Booklist

*Starred Review* In the 93 years from 1778 until 1871,  there were more than 400 treaties negotiated by Indian agents and government officials. These often included more than one tribe and covered a range of issues including ceded lands, payments and annuities, reservations, hunting and fishing rights, provisions for education, sovereignty issues, and more. Although the subject of treaties between American Indians and the U.S. government is vast and complex, editor Fixico and more than 150 contributors have crafted a comprehensive tool that will soon become essential for anyone interested in the topic. Volume 1 contains 22 essays dealing with federal policy, historical periods, regional treaty making, and other topics. The essays vary from 7 to 12 pages, and each contains a bibliography with references and items for further reading. Volume 2 provides short, chronologically arranged entries describing specific terms of both U.S. and Canadian treaties with Indians as well as A–Z entries for significant treaty sites. All entries have see also references and a short bibliography. This volume also contains the text of 40 treaties. The third volume offers a detailed historical chronology with 1- to 2-page entries, followed by biographical profiles of historical and contemporary individuals associated with treaties and Native rights. The third section of this volume contains entries that explain treaty-related issues, such as Assimilation, Doctrine of discovery, and the Trust doctrine. Volumes 1 and 2 have numerous black-and-white illustrations but no maps. A resource section with lists of “Alternate Tribal Names and Spellings,” “Tribal Name Meanings,” Treaties by Tribe,” and “Common Treaty Names” and a bibliography and comprehensive index are repeated in each volume. Both students and librarians will find the arrangement somewhat cumbersome, but it does provide the user with various lenses through which to view this complicated topic, and it makes particular aspects of the topic more manageable.   This impressive set has a place in any academic library that supports a Native American studies or American history curriculum. It also would be useful in public libraries where patrons are interested in the subject. It is the most comprehensive source of information on Canadian-Indian treaties and U.S.-Indian treaties. Also available as an e-book. --Dona Helmer

Top reviews from the United States

The contents of Volume 2 were bound in the cover for Volume 1 and vice versa. This binding error should not reflect on the intellectual content, but it is still a problem. On first glance the contents appear to offer a comprehensive source about treaties, though a previous reviewer's comments are well taken. The repetition of the contents, introduction and index would be called for if there were a market for each of the individual volumes, but that seems unlikely.

    Format: Hardcover
I have not read the 3 volume set yet except for the Introduction, Resources, Biobliography, and Index. These 4 headings can be found in every volume, i.e. a waste of about 200 pages. I sorely miss maps because treaties are mostly about ceding land which could be perfectly shown with maps. Furthermore, I miss some important treaties in the Primary Source Documents (e.g. Fort McIntosh, Hopewell, Fort Harmar, Greenville, Fort Laramie 1868). These would have needed about 100 pages more but we already saved 200 pages. There are some very grave mistakes and incredibly bad editing in the Resources section titled "Alternate Tribal Names and Spellings". As a starter: what do Aztec, Hohokam, Cora, Huichol, Lancandon, Mixtec, Tarahumara, Tequistlatecos, Toltec, Winik, Zapotec, and Yaqui have to do with U.S. and Canadian treaties? Moreover, Arapaho # Atsina = Gros Ventres); Delaware # Abnaki or Wampanoag; Gros Ventres # Hidatsa = Minitaree; Mohawk # Abenaki; Eskimo # Alutiiq = Aleut; Lumbee # Cheraw; Nanticoke # Unalachtgo = Delaware; Tututni # Tolowa; Yazoo # Chakchiuma. The editor (Fixico) and the press (ABC-CLIO) that claim to have made such a good book should employ somebody who knows at least something about the topic (my source: Carl Waldman's Atlas of The North American Indian). Since treaties are not exactly my strongest field of knowledge (I am simply very interested in Native Americans and read a book or two every once in a while), I will not be able to judge the text. I sure hope that there are NO mistakes there, and I can believe what has been written. As for the maps: I inquired the editor and the press about them some time ago, but - no surprise here - never got an answer. The interested layman shall pay USD 285 to ABC-CLIO (one can get it cheaper at Amazon) and shut his mouth, but no interested laymen/women means no more books to be sold (unless only university libraries are the target).
