The drongos are ornithologically known as 卷尾 juǎn-wěi 'curl tails'. The Black Drongo, in particular, has a number of names in popular and historical usage.

The racket-tailed drongos are ornithologically known as 小盘尾 xiǎo pán wěi or 大盘尾 dà pán wěi 'small plate-tails' or 'large plate-tails' because of their peculiar-shaped tails.
