The Art of Debugging in the Era of AI

Abstract

This talk addresses one of the most critical yet underappreciated skills in software development: debugging. While AI-assisted coding tools can accelerate development, they also introduce new challenges. From code that developers may not fully understand to subtle errors that escape regular testing cycles. Every AI-generated line of code still needs to be tested, validated, and verified before reaching production, making strong debugging skills more essential than ever.

Drawing on real-world experience solving complex production issues, this session will share practical approaches, proven techniques, and modern tools for effective debugging. It will emphasize debugging not as a reactive activity but as a systematic process for identifying root causes and building confidence in solutions.

The talk will cover three core areas: mindset, techniques, and tools. I will share how ChatGPT and other LLMs can help with analyzing error messages and exceptions. I will also introduce various other tools e.g., Charles Proxy, Datadog, Postman that assist during the debugging process.

Attendees will leave with clear, actionable strategies to debug smarter, faster, and more confidently, and to adapt their skills for success in an AI-driven development landscape.
