using xbox wireless adapter with series x controller. controls are mapping when i input them but aren't working in-game

I see that we can edit skin textures before starting a playthrough. But I don't see any way to do it after you've started a playthrough and want to change skin textures on a specific loaded save. Is this something that isn't possible?
