I Think I found it out, when you click on an empty spot that has an artifact the game stacks up the digs even if it doesn't affect the dig count and after some time it'll just show up as white.
honestly a great game made an account on itch just to comment, feel like the upgrades could be reworked to make them correspond with their prices better
