Control the visibility of your content’s nested block(s) with the Repeat Visitor block. Show what’s inside the page or post depending on how many times a visitor has visited the page.
Add the Repeat Visitor block
The Repeat Visitor block is available on all Jetpack-connected sites as it’s included in the Jetpack free plan. The Repeat Visitor block is a part of the Jetpack Blocks suite and is activated by default. See our Jetpack Blocks article to learn about the available blocks and how to activate them.
Jetpack Blocks require the Block Editor (also referred to as the Gutenberg editor). If you’ve installed the Classic Editor plugin, you have a few options:
- Deactivate the Classic Editor: Go to Plugins → Installed Plugins in your WP Admin and deactivate the Classic Editor plugin.
- Enable both editors: If you prefer flexibility, navigate to Settings → Writing in your WP Admin (not the menu under Jetpack settings). Set Allow users to switch editors to Yes. You will only see these options if you have the Classic Editor plugin installed and active.
Some custom themes or plugins may prevent you from using the Block Editor. In that case, please contact the support team for the plugin or theme for further assistance.
For more details, see Using Blocks and the Classic Editor.
- You can add the Repeat Visitor block by searching and/or selecting it from the Jetpack section of the block selector. Recognize the block as its icon with a reverse arrow around a clock is green.
- Upon adding the block, you have two main settings to manage: the “Visit Count Threshold” and “Visibility”. These options specify the criteria for displaying the block’s contents. You can read a description of your chosen settings in the blue block below the settings. This text is for the author only, and won’t be seen by your visitors.
- Adjust the Visit Count Threshold depending on the number of times a visitor should check your page or post before triggering the action from the Visibility settings.
- Select the Visibility setting on whether the content hidden by the block should appear after or before the value set with the Visit Count Threshold setting.
For example, if you set the Visit Count Threshold to 5, and Visibility to “Show after threshold”, the block content will only be displayed to people who have visited the page more than 5 times. On the first five visits, the content will not be displayed.
If you set the Visit Count Threshold to 3, and Visibility to “Show before the threshold”, the content will only be displayed to people who have visited the page at most three times. From the fourth visit onward, the content will not be displayed.
- Once configured the display criteria, you can add the content that will be displayed when those criteria are met. A default “Type / to choose a block” appears as you add the Repeat Visitor block to facilitate that, and you can add as many blocks and content you want.
Visit accuracy with multiple Repeat Visitor blocks
Visits are counted per page/post, not per block. This can cause confusion when adding multiple Repeat Visitor blocks on the same page.
For example:
- You add a Repeat Visitor block to a post, set to display after 5 visits.
- A visitor checks the post, and their visit count is 1.
- You then add another Repeat Visitor block to the same post, set to display on the first visit only.
- The same visitor checks the post again, and their visit count is now set to 2, so they don’t see the new block.
Block functionality and cookies
The Repeat Visitor block relies on cookies. If a visitor has cookies disabled in their browser, the block will not function correctly. If you see the block not working at all, checking on the cookies settings is the first step to take.
Block Toolbar
Click on the block to display the block toolbar. The Repeat Visitor block offers the following options in its toolbar:
- Width: set the width of the block by clicking the wide-width, full-width, or none icons.
- Default options: you can duplicate, lock, rename, delete the block, plus other default actions that comes to any block.
Block Settings
Every block has specific options in the editor sidebar and options found in the block toolbar. If you do not see the sidebar, click the Settings icon (looks like a menu) next to the Publish button. The Repeat Visitor block has only the Advanced features available in the block settings: you can add a CSS class to your block, write custom CSS, and style the block as you see fit.
