Even though it may not be a traditional, true or great Atelier game, I genuinely found Atelier Yumia to be addictive. I've previously played several of the main entries and I understand, for certain reasons, why hardcore fans would either skip or forget the existence of Atelier Yumia.

Upon first glace, I thought the crafting system looked flashy but as it turns out, crafting feels easier to do in this entry. However, I had trouble understanding which items had descriptions and what they specifically do. I felt that there was a lack of clarity in what some of the newly crafted items were meant to do. I've also heard that the crafting system is broken but I haven't tried to max all stats on gear myself.

I dislike the idea of building multiple bases. I'd rather have the restriction of building only one (particularly your atelier) as making many of them feels like a chore. When I'm prompted to make a base, I use one of the presets provided and move on to the multiple other objectives I would rather be doing. Camera angles feel awkward at times and placing objects surrounding your bases can feel wonky. I've experienced the hilarious glitch where Yumia unexpectedly jumps after a cutscene ends and everything around her disappears except for one lone NPC. Then I briefly fall down into the abyss until I'm brought back to the Ligneus region by default.

There's plenty to do as you wander around the continents of Aladiss and I'm sure we can all agree that some modern games take inspiration from open-world exploration as demonstrated in Breath of the Wild. Some might be tired of this idea and some may not. Some might be bothered by the fog surronding uncharted areas but I think this heightens the sense of mystery for what the whole world has to offer. All of the environments look diverse, lush and beautiful as you explore them.

Real-time combat instead of the traditional turn-based combat felt fun for a while and the tutorials seemed self-explanatory. I tried not to button-mash my way through enemy and boss battles and instead wait for the cooldowns of the characters special attacks before executing them accordingly.

As for the characters, they all seem like a decent cast. Yumia doesn't feel like a generic main character. She seems relatable and I do get where she's coming from, however, I found Isla quite amusing. She has a bouncy and bubbly personality yet she's also levelheaded. I appreciate how she interacts with the other characters, too. On the other hand, I also found Nina to be amusing. My first impression of Nina is that she is an eccentric lady who I thought would be an otherwise forgettable character. Later in the game, she grew on me. It's the mystique of her presence and quirkiness of her motives that changed my view of her as a character. When learning more about her backstory (and without spoilers), I couldn't help but feel connected to her. Her sense of purpose and belonging reminds me of the philosophical topic of existentialism.

It's mostly the sandbox nature and the removal of turn-based combat that rubbed me the wrong way. They might have felt like detriments to the game but overall, I think it's enjoyable if anyone is into JRPGs in general. I only hope that Gust thinks about how to bring both new and returning fans to the series. I also hope that they spice up the formula without having the series lose its identity or divide the Atelier fanbase. I'm interested to see what they'll do in the future with the main titles.

+ like cozy, comfy, easy-combat games
+ like cute characters
+ are new to Atelier game (just like me)

I think I'm going to play more Atelier games, once I'm done with this one!
