Review at 20hrs:
I have enjoyed Spirit City, but since it presents itself as a game/ap to help you study/be productive and it doesn't currently do that, I'm marking this as Not Recommended; however, some people might love it, it just really depends on what you're looking for.

Basically, Spirit City is halfway between a game and a productivity ap, and the game-y mechanics detract from the productivity aspects. This has beautiful chill visuals of your avatar working/relaxing/gaming/chilling in a bedroom that is very customizable, and you can choose one spirit companion at a time to sit beside you while you do that (entirely aesthetic). There is optional lofi background music, as well as a nice assortment of relaxing ambience sounds you can choose from and run as many at once as you want (including waves, rain, train, bubbling soup, seagulls, etc.) About once an hour a new spirit shows up. You get XP from your first log-in of the day, from the first task you complete off your to-do list per day, and from your first pomodoro timer use per day.

I am disappointed that checking more things off your to-do list doesn't get you XP, because for me, that would have been really motivating. I really wish the devs would let you choose where you get your XP - from timer use, or to-do list check-offs, or a few different XP set-up combinations, because without that, this is more forcing you into a game mechanic than useful as a productivity device. It motivates you to keep it on, and keep checking it to see if the next spirit has showed up, but not to actually be productive - overall, it's distracting. The best use I've found for it is to run it while doing things that don't require thought near my computer, like yoga or cleaning, but if I want to actually focus on work on my computer this isn't a good thing for me to have on, and there's too little customization in the actual game/program mechanics to adjust this for your own productivity needs. Right now, it's more of a nice chill aesthetic game, which is great if that's what you're looking for, but I'm disappointed I couldn't use this to make getting to-do lists done more exciting. It's also a bit too resource heavy for a background idler - I have a fast new gaming computer, and the music in this game still skips whenever I launch something new or am doing something heavy, and it really shouldn't do that.

Very cute, potentially helpful, but needs a lot of work.


It very much goes with the Body Doubling system where you leave the "game" running while you do things & get rewarded with in game currency and find cute spirit buddies to hang out with you while you get your tasks done. Except there are only a few little spirit friends & you can only have one out at a time. So you find them all pretty fast & pick your fav, but you also like that one & that one. Now there's no more to find & fine, we just get to pick one pet & ignore the others. Currency! Great! We can decorate the room. But the bed is still the bed and somehow the exact same color on the bed is a different color on the curtains and the chair... which are minor reskins of the exact same item in the exact same place. Well let's pick wall decorations. Shelves! Awesome. Except the shelves over here don't match the picture frames over there & there isn't an option that does match. Ok can't go with what I like so.... have to settle again? Ok skip decorating, lets buy clothes... except exact same problem. They're minor reskins of the same thing & the exact same color somehow clashes with what you used over there.

Discord Community: they have a Discord. That really doesn't do much other than post pics of their nearly identical rooms & nearly identical avatars. They have channels for submitting ideas & problems. Except I didn't see legitimate engagement. Only time I saw Mods interacting was to tell people to go to Welcome & finish the setup. I posted a question regarding accessibility & after a couple days had someone tag me in a response. Not a Mod, that's fine maybe they're trying to promote a helpful community. I checked out what they suggested & responded to them that it wasn't actually a solution but only cosmetic. To which I was told to stop tagging him cause he wasn't a Mod. So much for helpful community.

So ya. It has lots of potential & I wish them lots of luck as they develop it. But this is beta type issues & they have 3 DLCs. I'm moving on.

I got this game because I normally listen to lofi girl while studying (I'm in university) but this game has improved my abilities to focus while studying. It has also helped me know when to take breaks (I have ADHD). It has been a great help for me and i'm not kidding I have gotten better grades on finals and midterms because I can actually focus on studying T^T. Tysm devs ♥
