Vietcong was pretty ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ bad in anything but atmosphere.

Unresponsive team-AI, not completely replenishable health-bar, inaccurate shooting, extremely unfair enemy AI (they could shoot with their backs and see through foliage), the map was glitchy as hell and gamebreaking bugs resulting in constant "Game Over" moments, making you restart the whole damn mission.

Though half of these issues aren't much of a problem if you play on Normal or Easy but tactical shooters should always be played on the highest difficulty for maximum tension IMHO. And this is where Line of Sight managed to succeed.

How people can call this the best vietnam shooter ever made still boggles my mind.
You list "not completely replenishable health-bar, inaccurate shooting" as negative and then you write about tactical shooters and difficulty... and people simply play on difficulty they enjoy it most.

There sure was bugs, but i played whole game multiple times and never felt it stand out of comparable games of that era.

People can call Vietcong that because it isnt just mission-loading-mission but with massive amount of details to make it feel more real and immerse you in story.

Funny training missions, whole camp with shooting range for testing and choosing your weapons before missions, your own bunker with radio station playing vietnam era music, news, jokes. You could read documents about vietnam war, every ingame weapons parameters and history. Before missions there was briefing in main bunker with your team and commander, detailed written briefing and debriefing after mission, even diary main character wrote over game.
Mission wasnt just about shooting, main character commenting on situation, calling your radioman to inform base about current status and get further orders, funny teammates lines and more.

Because these things are connected to each other and enemy AI with godlike reflexes and "thermal-vision" don't exactly go well with not fully replenishable health-bar. I see what they were going for but it ruins the experience on Hard or Vietnam.

This is all atmosphere-related and it sure is done well but in no way does it contribute to it's gameplay core mechanics which are just terrible.
I played and finished whole Vietcong 1 + its datadisk Fist Alpha on hardest difficulty, and don't remember things you mentioned. They are ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ vietccongs, they should know where you are in their own jungle. And i know and remember i still ambush them multiple times.

I do remember Nam atmosphere and feeling i fight for my life and my team.
Great OST. Still listening today.
Superior dubbing by professional actors in my native language.

Heck, i just decided around Christmas i go find my old CD's and reinstall game.

I finished it on the hardest setting too, even without using the saves you are given but the AI can totally see through the foliage, I played around with godmode just to see how they work and it's really a problem, especially in that misty level where you have to use your map.
Vietcong is amazing, and I would shovel out hard cash for that game!
