From a purely technical standpoint, this is one of the best-running Unreal Engine 4 games I’ve tested so far — especially on Linux.

The game ran exactly as it should. The only issue encountered was very rare and minor audio crackling, which was infrequent and never game-breaking.

What stands out is how clearly this game demonstrates Unreal Engine 4’s shift toward being GPU-bound rather than CPU-bound. Even at extremely high frame rates, the GPU stayed near full utilization instead of dumping work back onto the CPU like older Unreal Engine 3 titles often did.

Performance stats (~2 hours of gameplay):

• GPU load: ~98–100% almost constantly
  
• FPS range: ~150–600 FPS
  
• Average FPS: 339
  
• 1% lows: 195 FPS

For an Unreal Engine 4 title, this is excellent behavior and very well optimized.

This game is clearly designed with controllers in mind.

I played using a PS5 controller, and in that context the controls feel natural and responsive. Analog input suits the flight model well.

That said, as a PC port it has well-known limitations:

• Very limited control rebinding
  
• Poor and restrictive HOTAS support
  
• No mouse support in menus
  
• Rigid assumptions about how the game “should” be played

These issues are widely documented in PC reviews and are still valid criticisms.

Ace Combat 7 is a fully arcade-style flight combat game.

While polished, the gameplay loop is narrow and highly scripted. Missions frequently rely on timers, visibility gimmicks, and forced objectives rather than emergent combat.

Personally, I find this style boring. That’s a matter of taste, not quality. The core mechanics are solid — they just don’t offer the kind of depth or freedom I enjoy.

The game places heavy emphasis on story, radio chatter, and cutscenes.

Whether that works for you will depend on tolerance for long exposition in an action-focused game. For me, it slows the pacing more than it adds value.

Still, presentation, music, and voice work are all competently done.

Despite not enjoying the game on a personal level, I still recommend it because:

• Excellent Unreal Engine 4 performance
  
• Very stable on Linux via Proton
  
• Strong visuals and sound design
  
• Solid arcade flight mechanics
  
• Runs extremely well even on older hardware

This is a technically impressive and well-polished title.
