a brief guide to a simple mage loadout (pre mech boss) :

Armor:
1. palladium armor
2. titanium / adamantite armor

Weapons:

Wands:
1. Flower of frost (ice mimics)
2. Sky fracture (crafting)
3. Life drain (crimson mimic)
4. meteor staff (crafting)
5. crystal vile shard (hallowed mimic)
6. poison staff (black recluses)
7. crystal serpent (fishing in the hallow)
8. frost staff (ice elementals, icy mermans)

Tomes:
1. Cursed flames (crafting)
2. crystal storm (crafting)
3. golden shower (crafting)

GUns:
1. laser rifle (wof)
2. orange zapinator (travelling merchant)

Others:
1. magic daggers (mimics)
2. medusa head (medusa)
3. blood thorn (hemogoblin shark from blood moon fishing)
4. spirit flame (tedious as ♥♥♥♥ i do not recommend)
5. shadowflame hex doll (goblin summoner)

sentry like weapons:
1. nimbus rod (angry nimbus)
2. clinger staff (corruption mimic)

recommended weapons in my opinion :
1.Sky fracture
2.Crystal serpent
3.Meteor staff
4.crystal storm
5.golden shower
6.orange zapinator? (unsure)
7.bloodthorn? (also unsure)
8.nimbus rod

Accessories (recommended) :
1. celestial cuffs
2. sorcerer emblem
3. mana cloak

HOW TO INCREASE DPS AS A MELEE CHARACTER

Flasks

flasks are like buff potions that can apply certain debuffs to your melee weapons like ichor or cursed flame. you can brew them by using an imbuing station that can be bought from the witch doctor.

they're relatively cheap but can help alot in your battles to either consistently apply a certain debuff or to do sum extra DOT damage

flasks that i recommend:
1. flask of ichor - there are very few mobs that are immune to this defense
corroding debuff which makes this the go to flask to use

2. flask of cursed flame - it does an ok ammount of dot damahe but they're alot of mobs that are immune to it making it kind of useless

3. flask of venom - this post plantera flask imbues your weapon with venom which is one of the most potent dot debuffs in game inflicting -6 persecond but has the same case as cursed flame

Sharpening Station

with the recent buff from 4 armor pen to 12 this makes the sharpening station almost essential to most melee users because in master mode both you and the mobs defense are calculated 100% so having armor penetration really increases dps. i recommend carrying it and favoriting in your inventory so you'll always be able to apply the buff

Wrath and Rage

what more do i have to say 10% damage and 10% crit chance

A brief guide to ranger setups (early hardmode) (premechs)

armor:
1. paladium
2. crystal assasin (not sure)
3. adamantite / titanium

weapons (that can be obtained but not necesarally good):

bows:
1. shadowflame bow (goblin summoner)
2. marrow (0.5% drop from skeleton archers)
3. ice bow (ice mimics)
4. daedalus stormbow (hallowed mimics) (nerfed)

guns:
1. clockwork assault rifler (wof drop)
2. shotgun (bought from the arms dealer)
3. onyxblaster (crafted with the shotgun and other stuff)
4. gatligator (extremely innacurate) (travelling merchant)
5. UZI (1% drop from angry trappers) (extremely worthwhile)

other:
1. dart pistol (high fire rate) (lower damage) (crimson mimics)
2. dart rifle (lower fire rate) (high damage) (corruption mimics)
3. toxikarp (fished from the corruption)

recommended loadout (preferred):
1.shadow flame bow
2. daedalus storm bow (i'm not sure) (nerfed)
3. onyxblaster
4. UZI
5. dart pistol/rifle (darts are actually quite good especially cursed flame dart)
6. toxikarp (because is cool)

accessories:
1. magic quiver (for the shadow flame bow) (skeleton archer drop)
2. ranger emblem (wof)

2. frostbrand (ice mimics)
3. bladetongue (fished from the crimson)
4. fetid baghnakhs (crimson mimic)

yoyos:
1. Chik (crafted)
2. gradient(RNG from the skeleton merchant)
3. amarok ( mobs in the snow biome)
4. helfire (mobs in hell)

flails:
1. drippler crippler (blood eels that are fished from a bloodmoon)
2. anchor (hardmode pearlwood crates)
3. chain guillotines (corruption mimics)
4. dao of pao (crafted)
5. KO cannon (bloodmoon enemies)

other:
1. flying knife (hallowed mimics)
2. shadowflame knife (goblin summoner)

preferred weapons:
1. shadowflame knife
2.amarok / helfire
3.drippler crippler/ chain guillotines
4.ice sickle

accessories: (these are optional so it's up to you)
1.Warrior emblem (wof)
2. Yoyo bag(yoyos are crazy good)
3 .power glove (feral claws + titan glove)
4 .flesh knuckles (crimson mimic)
5. obsidian shield(really optional)
