1. melee weapons are not required, but i STRONGLY recomend you have one at (almost) all times.
2. all (normal) characters are good. new players see melting as "hardmode", but he ends up being one of the best characters once you loop. and fish has a meh active, but his passive/ultras are great.
3. TAKE STRONG SPIRIT. strong spirit is crucial for a really good run. if you see it, take it. no matter what else is there.
4.if your having troubles with specific eneimies/bosses, prepare to unload ammo on them once you see them. for example, if you were to have trouble with big dog, prioritize killing him over saving ammo, and deal with ammo after he's dead. this can be applied to any enemies you find troublesome, but it should mostly be applied to bosses
5. finally, find a character that fits you. although this will take hours and hours of playing every character, it pays out once you find the 1 or 2 characters that you use best. dont think about which characters are your favorite, test out every single one and zone in on the ones you get farther with. i started off ignoring melting and eyes, but after i started trying them out, i was noticing much better playthroughs, and they ending up being who i play most.
of course, you dont have to follow all/any of these rules, these are just recomendations/personal rules that i have. if you DO try these, i hope they help you out.
