Haven't had that much fun with a game in a long time!

I initially got the game when it came out and spent a decent amount of time with it - but never finished it. I am now 35 hours into the PS4 version via PS5 backwards compatibility and the sheer amount of (good!) content is mindblowing. It's both challenging but also kind of relaxing to play. Music and art are beautiful, voiceacting is great and experimenting with different builds, weapon arts, summons and abilities feels very rewarding.

There's very little not to like about the game - in my case I got stuck on my way a couple of times and had to google the next path towards the next possible ending. Also, if you really want to see everything, there is some grind involved.

There's so much I have yet to explore, since the game has received a huge amount of DLC and bonus content over the years aswell.

8.5/10

A subpar experience that isn't worth your time.

Don't get me wrong here... the first Witcher game was a very ambitious project and you can clearly tell the love and passion that CD Projekt put into developing it. The environments, music and overall atmosphere of the game are still beautiful. But I would argue that by todays standards it's barely playable and enjoyable (especially when it comes to backtracking and combat) and it might actually hurt your overall appreciation for the Witcher series. It isn't required for your playthroughs of Witcher 2 and 3 either - since it's basically a retelling of some of the books' stories that eventually don't even lead to anything (in the games, not the book series).

My genuine advice to you would be to read the first two books ('The Last Wish' and 'The Sword of Destiny') instead, to get an idea about the world and it's characters. Afterwards you can start off the game series with Witcher 2, which isn't just a much shorter and more enjoyable game but also a much better showcase of what's to come in Witcher 3.

I advise everyone not to buy this port. The framerate sucks and there's screentearing all over the place. If you own a PS4 Pro go buy it for that system. It's a brilliant game. Such a shame they didn't give a ♥♥♥♥ when porting it to PC.

The best port of all Final Fantasy games I personally have played on Steam so far... which doesn't say a lot to be honest - but it's playable without mods and regular crashes the other ports are known for. The storyline is quite basic yet well executed and very touching at times - as is the music by Nobuo Uematsu. It's up to your personal taste if you like the artstyle and added voiceacting, I enjoy them quite a bit. With a few simple tweaks you can add anti aliasing, 30fps combat and the original Nintendo DS font which I highly recommend. Be warned if use the japanese voice files though as they will likely make the game crash a few times.
