To those who have conveniently dropped this line on me, this ones for you.
The idea of 'having a life' comes about when people have sth to compare with. Work vs non-working activities. If you dislike working/studying, then naturally you'll worship your after-work activities - things you do that makes you feel you have a life. Whatever these things are, 'having a life' is subjective. To me, there's no life in heading out for a drink only to listen to people complain about their job. (Fyi. I don't drink.)
I love working and I also enjoy my free time when I'm not. I see joy in both areas. So if we spend most of our lives working/studying, then non-working activities only carry a small fraction. If these small activities are your definition of 'having a life' - then you're not enjoying Life, you're only enjoying temporary moments. Even a long traveling vacation will still come to an end, work is still our main responsibility that we face for the most part of our lives. So simply put, if you don't love your work, it's you who don't have a life."
