I have played through this game many times on different systems and it is just one of those comfort games you can come back to every now and again. It really isn't perfect nor is it for everybody.

Like most people will tell you, there really isn't gameplay per say, more of an interactive story. You walk around, talk to people, do a few puzzles, deal with some Quick Time Events which were all the rage when this was made and make some choices that change the story in minor ways. The story is pretty pre-determined you have really stretch staying good friends with Kenny if you want to go that route. There are still some pretty bad bugs (if you are soft locking Chapter 4 while in the school, such as if you just load into the hallway, if the cutscene fails like Molly doesn't come through the roof, your return from the garage or the cutscene with the gas never plays you just have to restart the game). There are some pacing issues in some chapters that can take while and sometimes it can go without telling you where to go for your first time through. Some checkpoints are really good and others can you replaying entire sections. Also some characters are really short-chained and don't get a ton of time to be fleshed out.

Honestly, the most annoying thing is if you want 100%, which Telltale games are pretty notorious for, you have to get the DLC and even with that you have to get an achievement that pops through random chance. (Rock, Paper, Scissors) The checkpoint is not kind, I got lucky here but on PlayStation it took like 2 hours of restarts.

But with all of that it is still one of the more gripping stories I have played in a game, the story of a man protecting his adoptive daughter seems to have been a narrative made for gaming at this point. The stories goes into some really deep things that lesser studios might think is taboo. Clem rides a fine line of being clearly a child trying to learn about this world she find herself in a but she never really gets annoying likes many other child characters do. Lee is one of best main characters in video game history in my opinion. The writing is what these Telltale games live and die on and this is one that made them the household name they used to be. I think it's only competition is the Wolf Among Us and Tales of Borderlands

The voice acting just raises it up that much more, I can't think of anyone who puts in a bad performance. The score is subtle but you can find yourself humming it or just hearing it in your day to day. The graphics are not incredible but they hit a home run with the art style to keep it with it's comic book roots, it really shows how much a well executed art style trumps pure graphics.

It is also pretty short, which can either be bad or good depending on preference, I'm not the biggest fan of episodic release schedule but it does create almost the perfect casual experience as an episode can run just about two hours, I know for some people having that definitive cut off point can be nice.

All in all I think this is well worth it's price, but even more so with some of the insane sales this can go on and it works stand alone, even though the rest of story did get finished and even got a definitive edition which if you end up loving this I can't recommend enough. (Though some of the bugs are still there and a lot of the extras aren't usable which sucks.)

Again not for everyone, you love a challenge? This is not the game for you. Big into gameplay that allows for mastery of it's systems? Might be going hungry. But a great stories with characters that stick with you or maybe you just want some easy achievements, hey you found something new to sink your teeth into. (Pun intended) If you end up liking it there are a ton of these Telltale games to find to find, unfortunately the only other downside is depending on who you ask... you might have also just found the peak but it is still a nice hike down.
