Very good vehicle MMO for people interested in Armored vehicles and Aircraft... We dont talk about the ships...
Feels a lot more realistic then compeating games of this genre.
Huge amount of diverse vehicles with different playstiles lead to hundreds of hours of gameplay.
The research effort to get to the very top of a research tree takes a lot of time, so if you only want to play this game for the modern vehicles... just dont. You have to enjoy every era of the game in order to get an enjoyable experience out of it, so dont just force yourself to progress, otherwise you will feel miserable...

One of the biggest annoyance for me is the varying server quality... sometimes it works out just fine, sometimes you get miserable packet loss and arent in propper control of your own vehicle...
But if it works, it works, and it can be (almost) a lot of fun :)

EDITED 2 years later: Due to changes to the monetization model of this game i would not recommend playing it if you are not OK with dumping pretty copious amounts of money into this game (and you shouldnt be). The developers are following a strategy where a paid premium account is pretty much a necessity to make decent progress in the game. Furthermore paid premium vehicles are pretty much the only way to earn in-game currency, especially once you enter the later echolons of the game. Adding insult to the injury is that many of these premium vehicles straight up outperform their free to play counterparts.
This part is for Gaijin:
I believe most of the discontent from the community side of things does not necessarily stem from the economic changes on the 16th of May, it's more like this has been the day that the barrel of discontent ran over, it was the tipping point at which the largest part of the war thunder community has decided, enough is enough. We (especially us older players) have seen so many economic changes over the last few years. We have seen the introduction of more and more very strong premium vehicles as well as the power creep due to BR decompression following especially the introduction of more and more capable aircraft and air-to-air weaponry. Paired with growing repair costs and the ever-increasing grind to the top ranks of the game, has made it a basic necessity to purchase a premium account and competitive premium vehicles in order to even progress at the game in a somewhat agreeable pace. But instead of doing anything to help the players, it seems more and more is being done to make the grind even more miserable and frustrating. Even to the point where previous premium purchases are being devalued as a consequence of artificially raising the maximum rank to rank 8, thereby making all the previous top-of-the-line 60$ premium vehicles practically worthless for grinding the latest and greatest thing. 60 dollars. That's not some minor transaction. That's a full-price AAA game. And many people own multiple of them. And the grind still feels miserable. So in order to not just be a duche and cry about what is wrong i will leave some constructive criticism here with some suggestions as to what could be changed to improve the overall player experience:
-Stop balancing vehicles using repair costs. It doesn't work. Use the BR system if you see something overperforming. And on that note:
-Drastic BR decompression. We are talking BR 15.0-16.0 Range here. Reevaluate all vehicles in the game and adjust their spot in the matchmaker. "But the queue times!" No player cares about waiting 20 seconds longer to find a more enjoyable match. Believe me. We don't.
-Reduce RP costs for vehicles. This should be done basically every update when adding new vehicles. Otherwise you are per definition increasing the grind and the time to grind to the top. As you said in your post on the 19th of may "How progression and economy is built in F2P games and War Thunder in particular" you want this time to be a constant. Well, right now, PER DEFINITION, it isnt. Especially not when you keep adding new vehicles without reducing overall RP costs.
-APFSDS module should have reduced research points like FPE and Parts at top tier. Playing a top tier vehicle with heat is a chore beyond belief. Also: Why isn't FPE and Parts reduced RP cost in Naval yet? Like i know not many people play it, but maybe there are reasons for that...
-reduce crew training costs. Why is it so expensive to train a crew? Maybe i just want to put a tank on an other slot because i want to bring it out with another tank that i trained on the same crew? Well, now i have to train another crew for the FULL price AGAIN. I already paid for the tank. Now you make us pay AGAIN for the crew, and I have to pay AGAIN if i want to use it on any other crew? Come on. At least give us a dramatic discount for the second crew we train... In addition, crew training costs drain on the vehicle variety, if a player thinks they aren't going to enjoy a vehicle, why even try it? It costs a fortune to crew anyway, so its much more economical to just skip it and keep playing with vehicles one has already proven to be enjoyable.
-increase general RP and SL modifiers, especially for people without a premium account.
-What are Helicopters in this game? They are the WORST grind in this game, IMO they aren't even fun to play and ive found noone in their right mind who finds them fun to play against. Dramatic rebalance is required. rewards need to be increased 5 fold, or RP and SL costs need to be cut accordingly. Additionally: Please work on more propper game modes for them.
-This kind of cuts into the previous point: Rework top-tier CAS in general. Beginning from about BR 9.0 onwards, it just becomes such a pain. There is absolutely nothing you can do but watch as a tank when guided bombs and missiles are being dropped on your head from 10km out, and blow you into bits right after you spawn with astonishing precision. Who thought this is a fun gameplay experience? At the very least nullify repair costs to players who die while driving out of spawn, and or who die to CAS in general.

These are in my humble opinion the minimum required steps to BEGIN to move to game back into the right direction. This is not the end of this development though.
Thank you for reading my feedback, hope you have a great day.

Edit: They have proven willing to change the game for the better over the last few patches. As long as this trend continues i m willing to change my review back to positive.

Oum yes... So i have spend a bit of time in this game. Its pretty good you know. If you like grand RTS games this is one of the best ones to get. Very mod friendly, easy to waste a lot of time in this game.

The only negative things i have to mention are the shady DLC policy by paradox and the toxic multiplayer community :)
