TL;DR:

The Witch Queen and Final Shape are the only expansions worth spending your money on, DO NOT BUY SILVER FOR ANY REASON, and play the game as casually as possible with small goals in mind at first. Only buy the rest of the expansion when it's a really good sale (like 60% off total)

Unfortunately, my first and only review of this game has to be negative. Destiny as a series has been my comfort game since it launched in 2014 on consoles. Recently, that feeling has been fading away. The only thing keeping me playing is the enjoyment I get from playing with friends.

The game is Free-to-START. The real "Content" is locked behind several paywalls (there are several YouTube videos discussing these issues as of Season 21). The new player experience is less than mediocre and is missing all the key story beats and info to educate players on why they should even care to play.

Most of the dedicated playerbase is left feeling burnt out on playing because of drip-fed content using a redundant seasonal structure. Players keep asking for good changes, but results from the developers based on player feedback takes too long unfortunately. The quality-of-life changes they add are great, but come too little to late. Some requested features that are just now starting to arrive have been asked for since 2014.

Don't even get me started on content sunsetting. Content that we pay for is pulled out of the game on a yearly basis in order to "make room for new content and improve game stability". As of Season 21, the game has average stability at best. It is in the worst state with several disconnects and force logouts on a weekly basis. Bungie says they are working to improve it, but the timeline for that is also long due to the complexity behind their engineering.

With the recent release of the Lightfall expansion, players were given a below average experience overall. The only saving grace being the release of new abilities in the form of Strand. But as a whole, Lightfall's campaign, raid, narrative, loot, and destination content has been the most boring and since Season 3 (over 5 years ago). We are now in Season 21 where the storytelling, loot, and activities are all very uninspired. Most of the content released with some seasons that actually is enjoyable is again locked behind ADDITIONAL PAYWALLS (Dungeons). Economic inflation exists, but there are several yearly activities that used to be free or included in what we already paid for. The game has become MOSTLY pay-to-win in the form of the Season Pass rewards (again several videos available on this specific point).

The PvP does not and HAS not received the content it deserves for their loyal playerbase. Bungie has chosen to neglect their current flagship title for a "new" one, Marathon (there is proof in the form of several developers switching from Destiny 2 development to Marathon). And now that neglect is starting to show across the game as a whole, both in it's free updates, and the paid annual/seasonal content.

I have tried multiple times to get friends and family to try this game several times, but at this point I recommend finding something else. I am the type of player that finishes what they start. I will be there through The Final Shape's content release to see where things go next, but at this point I am keeping my expectations WAY down.

Money talks sadly, and this game is a huge example of that.
