Game is pretty fun when it works, but had an extremely rough launch plagued with server issues that severely soured it. I originally left a negative review to warn buyers against purchasing until they were fixed, with the promise that when they fixed I would change it to a positive review, which they've now done so I'm holding up my end of the bargain.

Still, buyer beware because although they've fixed the major showstopper issues, there are still a ton of other issues, but the game is good enough to eek out a thumbs up from me at this time.

Early Access Review
I hate to do this, but it must be made known on the front page that the developers currently have no intention at all of including VR support in this game.

Instead, they would rather make excuses to not include it this time (it was a core feature in the first Everspace) despite an overwhelming response from the community (that you can go see for yourself in the discussions, as I'm sure the VR Support thread will probably be the largest ongoing thread for quite some time), and instead they've stated that they *may* consider making a standalone product after this game has seen it's full release in 2022, or if we're lucky then maaaaaybe add it to this title after the full release, but based on their attitude and disdain towards us being vocal about this, I highly doubt so.

In other words, at best they are being capitalistic scum that want to double dip on some of their fanbase's goodwill and sell them the same product twice (because we all know they probably wouldn't give any sort of discount to existing owners... rarely any developer does these days) rather than give everyone a better value for their money product sooner (and lets face it, they are already pushing their luck with their higher than expected cost, which at launch is $51 CAD, so they have no excuse). At worst, they are just completely disregarding, disrespecting, and alienating a significant portion of their supporters and fanbase as they prioritise the rush to make the biggest return on the game with the least amount of effort possible. I don't disagree with the first part, I want them to be successful and the game to sell well, but I don't support the latter of being lazy in how they do it... they should earn every dollar they make, and stripping core functionality that existed in their previous game is not how to do it.

So as much as it pains me to say so (because I loved the first Everspace and had a lot of respect for RFG for their ongoing support for it), for now my review for anyone wanting and expecting the same VR experience from the first Everspace is to make a hard pass. I'd also like to suggest to anyone who is reading this that after learning it will not have VR support included is no longer interested in buying the game to please join the many others in the VR Support thread in the Steam forums, and simply add your own "No VR, no buy!" comment there to help show RFG the number of lost sales from their ill-informed decision (and ensuing stubbornness).

I've owned Distance since it first came out in early access. I've played through the entire game 3 times at various stages of development (which is 3 times more than 90% of my Steam library, and 2 times more than 99% of it), most recently in VR, and each time it's been a gripping experience. The game drip feeds you the driving mechanics, at first seemingly trivially easy and progressing into a trippy Tron death obstacle course that requires a fair bit of skill and precision to navigate, but feels oh so slick when you finally nail the section. Helps if you love electronic music.
