ever since i first picked up hunt showdown (now 1896) i have watched the game i fell in love with slowly slip away. from puzzling balance changes, strange and misplaced weapons and gadgets, to changes to the game as a whole, hunt's unique identity has eroded with time. in order to make the game more broadly appealing, crytek has endlessly attempted to streamline the game, rewarding players who seek the most optimized loadout. the appeal of hunt for ME, and i suspect many who have played the game, was that it was so DIFFERENT.

hunt was, at its core, gritty, realistic, and unfair. it always felt as though you (and your squad mates) could stand alone at the end of any match, bounty in hand. whether you fought with honor or slinked through the swamp like a weasel, you could win in a variety of ways. weapons were deliberately unbalanced, with the most exclusive of armaments being attainable only after being unlocked through weapon mastery (and orginally a level requirement). while being a successful hunter was certainly a matter of aim, it was also a test of dedication. a commitment to a certain playstyle was rewarded, and each game felt like it could be a unique experience.

this kind of experience was unique and niche, but in the days of live service and endless updates, hunt had to evolve to stay interesting. the result of this constant evolution was a gradual departure from the identity, punctuated firmly in its latest rebranding. Hunt: 1896, is an underwhelming attempt to enter the mainstream. it has stripped itself of what made it unique in an endless pursuit of optimization. hunts balance was once interesting and niche. NOW, after slowly attempting to evolve into a more palatable shooter for mainstream audiences, hunts balance now feels terrible; because the game is attempting to shift its identity into a shape it will never be able to conform to.

hunt was once an interesting and gritty and violent expedition through late 19th century lousiana. it has completely lost its aesthetics and charm, evidenced no better than with the implementation of a downright horrific UI and a departure to the bright and picturesque hills of colorado. i have no intention of playing the game again until the UI is either reversed to its previous state or dramatically overhauled. regardless, the game i loved has slipped away and i fear the charm and intrigue of hunt: showdown has been lost completely with its latest update.

I played a two hour long game with my friends. Our sanity gradually declined as we became nothing but laughing, crying blobs. It was endless torture. There was no end, there was no hell. There was UNO. One of my friends went AFK for twenty seconds and got replaced by a bot. He cried. The bot won. We all cried. I've never felt such raw emotion. No game has ever filled me with such dread. UNO is nothing short of insidious, and should be wiped off this planet.

10/10, would suffer existential nightmare again

Unturned, where to begin? As a fan of games like Fallout, I jumped on this game when I heard about it, I had low expectations. However, after playing the game for practically 20 minutes I was hooked. Let's start at the beggining of the game. You don't get much besides a Flashlight, food, and water, and only room for 4 items in your inventory. This gave me a feeling of helplessness as I tried to beat zombies to death with a flashlight just so I could grab some mild loot. This feeling makes it feel more realistic, you start with barely anything and have to work your way to the top. After you get some loot, and maybe encounter players, you might have a group formed, or, if your like me, you just shoot first. Once you have a gun or two looting becomes... easier, I use that term lightly. Guns and ammunition ar'nt that hard to come by but ammunition is rarer than guns practically, which means at most points you should conserve ammunition and kill things with your melee weapon. I carried a machete for melee, but then I found a ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ katana, letting me be a ninja. When you get good loot, armour, and guns you can start too really show who's boss. I myself set up little mini bases wherever I went, I could revisit them for a resupply anytime I wanted. This makes you feel accomplished, you feel as though you've won, but getting the loot is the easy part.

After you've stored some of your loot and are pretty decked out some other players will come after you, they might be newcomers looking to steal some things and get away, they might be experienced players here to take you out, or they'll come in groups of players who would'nt be that bad on their own, but they are strong in groups. Maintaining a strong base and loot cache is extremely hard depending on who wants you rlooot, having mini outposts like me lets your loot be able to be stolen, but then it's not a huge loss. This will keep you occupied awhile, until you're unkillable, that's when you've pretty much beat the game. To sum it up Unturned is a great title that I reccomend to anybody, it's fun, addicting, and hella scary at some points, this game will surprise many gamers.

I give Unturned a 9/10, and hope it gets even better.
