Story is thin, characters don't have much going on, and there's nothing thematically meaningful despite the portent, but the gameplay and atmosphere are too good to ignore. It's almost a 20 year old game now. Ludonarrative dissonance has far outlasted the core meaning of the game itself, mostly because the game doesn't have anything to say. But it has atmosphere, gunplay, etc. for days. 8/10. Gameplay overshadows almost anything about the writing and story.

Gearbox knocked this out of the park. If I have a minor criticism, it would be that the puzzles are often unintuitive and difficult primarily because of a lack of context clues, but the small advances on lore building, weapon design, the strive to focus on puzzle-solving, and the variety of weapons compared to Half-Life 1 make this an excellent play even in 2025. The games made during this time have mostly aged very well and it's nice to see such a good version still on Steam right now.

I can never in good conscience recommend a game this grindy to anybody except for the most desperate masochists.

(This is a review of Red Dead Online only).

Incredible game. The game gives you so much to do, there's a beautiful diversity of enemy types, different sections of the game tackle different genres/styles deftly, the story is one of the better written ones in recent Resident Evil history, the gunplay (and knifeplay!) is excellent, and because of the way the game is structured around collectibles and speedrunning there is a lot of incentive to play the game multiple times. One of the most enjoyable experiences I've had with a game in a long time. Can't wait for the DLC!

It's a good game. Love tormenting humans as a goose. Down with all humans. Need mods to push it to the limit. 9/10 only because the devs held back like cowards.

Fantastic remake of Half-Life with basically no qualms. The Source engine improves the platforming of the game, the Xen levels are tuned up to be less truncated, the guns have more oomph than in the original Half-Life, and overall it's just gorgeous.
