In my opinion, the backlash towards 2042 is a bit overblown by the hardcore fans. There are many good things in the new game, but it's important to note that this iteration has removed some of the key elements of the classic Battlefield formula. Mainly, the class-based system of old (Medic, Support, Assault, and Recon) has been removed in favor of using different playable Specialists instead.

Ignoring the fact that the classic formula has been completely changed, you'll find many other great features that you come to expect from the Battlefield franchise. Battlefield 2042 is large scale combat presented at an epic scale. GIGANTIC maps are filled with 128 players, all vying for control of scarce vehicles and advantageous high-ground positions. While there aren't a huge variety of guns in the initial release, there are plenty of unlocks to motivate you to grind to improve your character and weapons. I'm pleased that the developers have quickly patched the worst weapon imbalances already as well.

My biggest complaint about the game after launch is that the weapon customization is clunky at best, and downright frustrating at its worst. But after ~20 hours into the game I'm getting used to the customization quirks and it doesn't detract from my overall impression of the game play. I also find it difficult to quickly identify if a player is a friendly or enemy because both teams are using the same pool of specialists. This ruins a touch of the immersion as well, and the game feels more arcade "red team vs. green team" instead of realistic "faction vs. faction."

Overall, I enjoy Battlefield 2042 and I'm glad to have a fun Battlefield set in a modern era. It seems like every release that comes out these days is accompanied with an angry horde of pitchfork-waving gamers that insist the developers have ruined the game. I encourage you to keep an open mind and make your own decisions.
