MASTERPIECE

I was in the army in my first time reading Muv Luv and... yeah, as a soldier from Special Forces I can say this is the best piece of media not only about war but about Reality, Experiences and Love that I've ever seen in my entire life. I can't express 100% my thoughts in a review without spoilers but I can say this is like my 2nd favorite work in any media. Kouki Yoshimune (Muv-Luv author) is a genius and if you want to read Muv-Luv, don't start from here. Alternative is the 3rd Visual Novel and the ending of a trilogy. Start with Muv-Luv Extra/Unlimited and don't try to create hype before the time, both Extra and Unlimited are amazing and without them you will never get what this story wants to talk. Read it looking for what they are. The work originally is kinda a bait to eroge readers but when it received a port to steam, they broke this idea showing that this work have genre shift and mecha and yada yada. Even you know that, don't throw this curiosity 100% when you read Extra. Even being a "bait", Muv Luv Extra keeps with a amazing story with Slice of Life, Romcom and some references of other japanese media works like Initial D, Vampire Savior or Virtua On. Alternative you can get some ideas here and there of inspirations too. A lot about old books, war movies and even popular games like Metal Gear Solid.

My opinions are like... MAN IT'S MY FAVORITE VISUAL NOVEL EVER. I hope more people could experience this masterpiece. The trilogy is amazing and the "spin-offs" are good too. From my interpretation because I was in the army: It's about you turning 18 and choosing whether to join the military or not. Extra is your normal life, Unlimited is the shock of reality that you get when you enlist and Alternative is you accepting that reality when you know there is no going back. It is the one of the best possible messages about "experience". The transition from Extra to Unlimited by itself has a lot of narrative weight because of this "reality shock", this transition from one universe to another (in both senses, like literally and from a student to a soldier). Alternative being the conflict of those two and a final place to prove the true love in a lot of ways makes this a timeless work even for his time (2005). The characters, the plot, everything and MAN... ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ JAM PROJECT IN THE OP AND INSERT SONGS! IT'S AMAZING! Muv-Luv changed my life for better and I am very grateful for that.
