They wanted to make a movie and it shows so badly through this, I swear it's like Amnesia, but with safety wheels. Also, I get it. Looking at Lovecraftian stuff should have some kind of affect on you, the player, but that doesn't work here because you're playing pretty much a triple A title that spent the money because they WANT you to look at the stuff. But to more or less punish the player for looking at the stuff makes no sense.

Also I know I already said this, but it was such an issue for me that it needs to be said again. This was such a movie video game, the narrative cutscene stuff felt vastly more engaging and far more dynamic than anything the game offered in terms of real gameplay by a wide mile. Before you say anything, I get it, puzzle solving stuff is fun, but if I wanted to play what this game offered I feel like I'd be better off playing a game like Disco Elysium. At least the there the RPG elements really matter to the flow of the story and I feel like I'm actually experiencing a story while playing a video game. Meanwhile, you pretty much have narrative branches here all amount to the 3 endings this game offers you. And I do not like any of them, mainly because they all fall into their horror movie ending trope, each one of these I hate equally. Also, it is worth mentioning that this game only took me 7 hrs. to beat. I think I spent a third of that actually playing a video game beyond selecting dialogue options and getting lost.

Here's the thing, I don't care if this isn't an action game or not in the slightest. That's never what was important to me when considering what I want a Call of Cthulu game to actually play like. What I wanted was something akin to the Resident Evil games of old. I want to sneak around while still having the option to fight, I want scarce ammo, I want all the tropes that come with the world of survival horror. But this game didn't deliver on that. Heck, pardon me for being opinionated in my own review, but I don't even think this game delivered on what it set out to be to begin with.

Overall, if I had to put why I don't like this game into one, concise complaint then it would be this: If the devs put as much time, effort, & money into the gameplay as they did the cutscenes then there would be a real video game here.
