Swift to quarrel, eager to strive, yet craven when chanting Hari’s praise)

દવ લાગ્યા પછી કૂપ ખોદાવે આગ એથી ક્યાં ઓલવાશે રે?
ચોરો તો ધન હરી ગયા, પછી દીપકથી શું થાશે રે?

(When rages fire, thou digst a well—how shall this quench the blaze?
The thieves have stolen all thy wealth; what use now is a lamp?)

તલ મંગાવો ને તુલસી મંગાવો, રામનામ લેવરાવો રે;
પરથમ તો મસ્તક નહીં નમતું, પછી નામ શું સંભળાવો રે?

(Call for sesame, call for tulsi, bid them chant Ram’s name;
Yet if thy head bows not in faith, what worth is that sound to thee?)

રામનામનું દામ ન બેસે, કામ ખડે નહીં કરવું રે;
સહેજે પાર પંથનો આવે, ભજન થકી ભવ તરવું રે.

(Ram’s name finds no worth in thee, for thou shirkest all effort;
At the slightest hint of hardship’s path, thou flee’st from prayer’s redemption)

જેનું નામ જપે જોગેશ્વર, શંકર શેષ વિરંચિ રે;
કહે ‘પ્રીતમ’ પ્રભુનામ વિસાર્યું, તે પ્રાણી પરપંચી રે.
