Early Access Review
Childhood nostalgia paired with guns - a game I never knew I wanted!
If you enjoy survival games similar to ARK (but with way less bugs and crashes), this is money VERY well spent. As always, it is more fun with friends, but won't fail to keep you entertained even in single player.

Pocketpair deserves your money, for this game, its quality, the multiple updates given out for FREE, and also for standing up to the big lazies who think they deserve what's in your wallet without even trying.

Moving away from the copy+paste titles of big publishers, I found myself falling in love with pixelated indie games more and more.
DAVE THE DIVER is definitely my favourite game of 2023!

I completed the game (100%) after finishing the story and found this game so worthy of my time to go the extra mile(s) to have every possible species card in gold, two of each in my fish farm and upgraded all the recipes.
Not to forget there was a free (!) content update in October, adding more ways to catch, more species, and more missions! Thank you, MINTROCKET!

If you love / enjoy any of the following, this game might be right for you:
  • the sea
  • sushi
  • cats
  • quirky humor
  • some grind
  • good soundtrack
  • boss fights with different mechanics
  • deep story (much deeper than I had anticipated)
  • collectibles and tamagotchi

tl;dr
Nice that they give this for free but it's basically (less than) the game as a comic book.
If they would actually charge you for it, that would be a huge disappointment.

What is it and how do I get it?
What you get here is the game in comic book form but without player's choice and fights (which shortens the whole experience quite a bit). Don’t get me wrong, I am a huge fan of Sin City (the books and the first movie) and the art style and story are so damn similar that you could almost call this a copycat. Which is still not a bad thing, it is nice and all. It’s just… play the game. You won’t get anything new here.

My reason to give this DLC a thumbs down is simply its accessibility. Some people seem to struggle to get access to this free DLC, so I’ll end my review real quick with a ā€œtutorialā€.

  1. Download the game, then go to your library and the game’s DLC section.
  2. Click on ā€œManage my 2 DLCā€ and make sure that the box for ā€œLux Obscura comic bookā€ is actually ticked. That was not the case for me, though I downloaded the game from the comic book’s store page (yeah, not kidding).
  3. Go to the game’s folder ( …\Steam\steamapps\common\Metropolis Lux Obscura ) and find the Metropolis.pdf next to the game’s .exe
  4. Enjoy (no, seriously, better play the game you already own!)

Let's say it like this: whoever wrote the game's store description got paid well. The mentioned key features teem with glorifying adjectives though they couldn't be further away from telling the truth. Sure, I admit that the hand-drawn graphics have a lot of charm, I acknowledge that as a fact. What makes me toss my cookies is the comparison of this ridiculous non-sense with Douglas Adams', Terry Pratchett's, and Matt Groening's work. In my personal opinion that's about the same level of impudence as comparing an infant's drawing with Leonardo da Vinci's scientific studies.

There are some adventure games out there that might issue with a challenge. But if it requires you to take a load of pills and to run straight against a wall an indefinite amount of times (head first please!), that is the kind of challenge you have to face in Deponia. What makes things a lot worse is the character this game forces you to impersonate. I love silly comedy – I truly love it and you can easily catch me laughing at any childish joke – but Rufus ain’t anywhere close to goofy entertainment. Listening to this nuisance of a character is nothing but painful (not kidding), besides he is the most unlikable character I’ve encountered in any game at any point in my past. He has no rivals in that at all. I admit that second hand embarrassment might be entertaining from time to time. Not this time.
I consider myself an achievement hunter but no way that I would ever re-install this game to finish it. It would require a walkthrough all the time (thanks to those moronic ā€œriddlesā€) but I highly doubt that I could ever reach that level of masochism. Save the money and get yourself some of the good old classics instead, like Monkey Island, Day of the Tentacle, Grim Fandango, King’s Quest or Simon the Sorcerer. They didn’t have to compare themselves with the masters of hilariousness and didn’t flat-out lie to you by doing that (and, unlike Deponia, you can easily find those gems by looking up several top adventure games lists).

To put it in a nutshell, there is one thing to be found on the store’s page that hits the nail right on the head: ā€œwe know everything about junk!ā€
