A deceptively knowledge-based game in which I continue to learn new things in even after 600 hours. My favorite single player experience by far.

While I thank Gearbox for providing this update for free to past owners (like me) I really can't recommend this, not for $30 and especially not when the decidedly better polished Borderlands 2 is going on sale for less than 10 bucks lately. The game really is at it's best when playing 4-player co-op with your friends but if you need copies for everyone that's $120 on a ten year old game! Just not worth it.

These updates have introduced a lot of bugs, but the game does surprisingly well otherwise. Personally, I thought the graphics held up amazingly and it plays well at 3440x1440 resolution on my outdated r9 390 graphics card.

Major bugs I've run into include
  • -Cutting out dialog.
  • -Some quest objectives have failed to complete, but thankfully so far have been fixed by restarting the game and re-doing them.
  • -Loot from all sources gets randomly scaled down in level(!!). Kill the level 12 boss Bone Head? Get a level 2 Bone Shredder. Complete the level 13 build-a-sniper-rifle quest? Get a level 5 sniper. Farming the level ~14 Sledge's Safehouse? Half the loot is leveled 2-4 and completely worthless... For a franchise whose biggest feature is the looting, this is a pretty frustrating bug to constantly deal with.
  • -This update also breaks nearly all the popular modding tools. PlayerNumSetter, WillowTree, ect. Thankfully the community seems to be working to update those tools, but veteran players coming back to the game will probably miss them especially since it's currently the only possible way to slightly alleviate the horrid loot scaling issues (by manually raising the level of gear with WillowTree)
  • -If that wasn't bad enough, the new update gave me a separate copy of the game in my library for the new version ("Borderlands: GOTY Enhanced") but also ran an update on my original copy of the game.... I don't know if it was some patch to add in some sketchy BS or what, but it's permanently broke my original copy of the game with no solution so far. Such a mess.

I really am grateful for the free update I got, truly! The developers have my respect and I've been gritting my teeth through the new bugs and enjoying the nostalgia of a childhood favorite. But at the end of the day I seriously cannot suggest anyone pay $30 for a buggy decade-old game just because it got a face lift, I'm sorry.

If you already own the game from before and are just wondering if it's worth giving a try with the new update, I'd say go for it. It's been great holding me over for the next Borderlands game and I'll be playing the Pre-sequel next.

You either love it or you get too frustrated to keep investing your time into it. But for those who do invest the time into Planetside, I believe it is worth it - This game has given me five years of joy and countless wonderfully hillarious and memorable moments, and I look forward to as many more years as possible.
