Used to play 1 back in ~2016-2018 and had fun, downloaded this one and while most of the population is in All Any mode, I've had a good experience playing it and can quickly gain hours without even noticing how long I've been playing. Met some nice people in lobbies, and seen others as well as myself teaching people in dead chat the mechanics if they're confused.

Can play for free using keys that replenish like a stamina system or play unlimited all day for $5. Cheap price for how many hours you can spend. Would like to see this game grow bigger again like it used to be.

This was the only DMC game I hadn't played, growing up playing 1-3 and later visiting 5. I honestly think it's a good game, though it also has very noticeable flaws. Granted, depending on who you are you can overlook them to varying degrees. I beat the main campaign on my initial run-through in around 17 hours give or take with some downtime AFK - leaving room for a short story but a lot of replayability as with other DMC games.

I'll put a TL;DR at the bottom.

For the good points:
- The game has a fun combat system, Nero is a very good character introduced into DMC4 with a fun move set and his buster is cool. Dante's weapons are cool as well, I prefer Gilgamesh compared to Balrog in 5 for example, and Lucifers concept is sick.
- The music is good; Berial's theme is nice in my opinion, as well as The Time Has Come are two songs that stand out to me. Overall good soundtrack especially if you enjoy more religious, church-y music with a twist.
- Story is nice. Dante takes a backseat, allowing Nero to shine - and the voice acting Nero provides is PHENOMENAL as well as the emotion portrayed by him for Kyrie. Plot wise, I really enjoy what this game brought to the series - even though it may have plot holes. Their relationship is very cute and I enjoyed it a lot.
- 5 playable characters is a nice touch, Vergil is a popular character that returns in this game as well as Lady and Trish making their debut as playable characters which we don't get anywhere else. In the main campaign it's split between Nero and Dante, with Nero's missions being more engaging, so if you're a fan of Nero then the gameplay will be good for you.
- The visuals of the game are very nice especially for the original release being in 2008 prior to the Special Edition, and I really love the aesthetics each area provides. Very pretty for its age, and I adore Nero's character design as this is my favorite design of his between 4 and 5.

For the bad points:
- The game is very repetitive, half the campaign is going through the same levels and bosses you've already done, fighting them a total of 3 times, and backtracking into the same level design per Nero and Dante. This is where it varies - if you're like me, I don't particularly mind backtracking, so this doesn't turn me off much. If I love the aesthetic of the level, I don't really mind. This will be different for everyone.
- A lot of enemies are designed around Nero and Dante's kit was not fully thought out, so some enemies are tougher on characters that aren't Nero and may be frustrating (Example: Cutlass/Sharks) I personally think this game has a lot of enemies that are annoying or frustrate me, but I can also see the appeal of them being fun for others. Dante's combat in this game with these enemies isn't always favorable.
- Compared to Vanilla, Devil May Cry 4 Special Edition has some input lag and performance issues that make it sometimes difficult to load up. I didn't have this problem, in regards to crashing, and I didn't notice the input lag my first run through, but I know it's an issue for some players and has been mentioned a lot by the community. For a casual run I think this version is fine.

Overall, while a flawed game, it's a fun one and definitely a game I recommend any modern-day DMC fans or Nero fans to play, especially if you enjoy more heartfelt stories. The combat overall feels pretty smooth, especially as Nero - I would include Dante with practice on him as he isn't easy - and fun to play with. If you like more unique enemies then the design in this game will be more for you as you can't just wildly swing at them either. Overall it's pleasing to the eye, but also repetitive if that isn't your thing.

TL;DR:

Graphics - 4/5 Nice for its time. Very pretty.
Gameplay - 3/5 Very good combat but repetitive level design.
Audio - 4/5 dmc soundtracks are good and dmc4 delivers, though I think it's outclassed by 3 and 5. Nero's voice actor did an amazing job in this game as well.
Difficulty - Medium, some enemies require more brainpower but the game isn't hard on Human/Devil Hunter.
Grind - No grind unless you want to do the rest of the difficulties or Bloody Palace. First runthrough isn't a grind at all.
Story - Good. Nice emotional story but short. Establishes a relationship between Nero and Kyrie.
Price - if it's on sale, it's worth picking up. I got it on sale for $7 CAD and I don't regret it at all.
Bugs - Moderate, some may encounter ones other do not. My experience was bug-free, but your mileage may vary.
OVERALL - 7/10, worth on sale, good but flawed game. Enjoyable and worthwhile experience if you like combat and don't mind repetition.

Actually fun coming from a League player who doesn't enjoy the traditional Battle Royales like Fortnite. Takes a few games to get used to but once you figure out what you're supposed to do, it's pretty easy to pick up on and the currency is generous.
