Early Access Review
Not sure yet.

For an early access game it certainly shows some potential, but there are a few things that really bring it down for me.

Pros:

- I like the art style, characters/enemies/backgrounds all look nice.
- Some character customization is nice.
- Space age laser pick axe type thing with rifles to defend yourself is always promising.
- Has a decent tutorial that I would have probably been 100% lost without.
- I liked the quest/task system in place that was used for the tutorial. I would love to see this used a good bit in later builds of the game. Random quests/tasks/challenges while exploring the world would add a good bit of excitement for me.

Cons + personal opinions/feedback:

- The UI. Oh man the UI. This is the one thing that, if not updated significantly, will stop me from playing this game again. Every time I'd look for something I felt myself straining my eyes trying to discern exactly what I was looking at. Similar looking icons in inventory, small text in several places, and a very clunky and unrefined crafting menu (in a crafting game) made it so that every time I'd stop blasting things with my laser saw to go look at my loot or craft something I would grumble to myself a little bit about how I had to go back into the menus. I hope updates are coming for some of UI/menus, especially the crafting menu and/or system. Please oh please.

- Also didn't care for the health/jetpack meters being on such a noisy panel up in the corner like they are. It was a hassle to try and read while running/fighting anything. I would rather just have a couple of bars or numbers above my character or some such thing so that I can see a gauge while I am looking at my character and moving about.

- The [lack of] transition from day to night was so abrupt that I thought it was a bug or my game was crashing or textures had stopped drawing. Day/night is great to have, but needs to be a transition, not instant.

- It seems like the way to unlock new things to craft is by collecting these little book things that give +25 or so to various crafting skills. I don't much care for that as a gating mechanic, maybe it would be better if more was available initially or if there was a better indication of how using different materials to craft the same item would make a better one. Additionally, I really didn't enjoy that I would find these little books, then have to go into my inventory, select them, equip them on my action bar, and then pull them out and use them in order to gain experience from them. Unless they are to be used for something else I am unaware of, I don't understand why they are inventory items instead of just experience type pickups that occur automatically and scroll a nice little "+25 Furniture!" or something over your head.

I should stop rambling. There's my 2 cents.

I hope some of this has been helpful if anyone's read this far. I know people compare this game to Terraria, which I have not played. It may very well be that much of what I don't like is based around Terraria's success and these elements I don't like just aren't to my tastes. If that's the case then I guess it just isn't for me - ignore all that junk above. :)

My conclusion - As it exists now, several different issues come together to make a disappointing experience. I hope that is just due to it being in an early stage, and that we'll see much more polish/improvement in the next few months. I think that when/if the right things are made better the whole game could come together quite nicely.
