Gameplay and Atmosphere

Resident Evil 0’s gameplay is quintessential old-school survival horror, with limited ammo, save ribbons, and a focus on inventory management. The game’s pacing is deliberate and slow-burning, building tension as you navigate the Umbrella Corporation’s sinister training facility. The atmosphere is creepy and foreboding, with creaking doors, flickering lights, and an unsettling soundtrack.

Story and Characters

The story, while convoluted and occasionally laughable, provides a fascinating glimpse into the Resident Evil universe’s early days. Rebecca Chambers, a rookie S.T.A.R.S. member, and Billy Coen, a former Marine, form an unlikely duo as they investigate a mysterious train and uncover the dark secrets of Umbrella. The characters’ interactions and banter add a touch of humanity to the game’s horror.

Visuals and Sound

The HD remaster’s visuals are impressive, particularly considering the game’s age. The updated graphics and widescreen support enhance the game’s already eerie environments. The sound design, including the creepy ambient noises and unsettling sound effects, is equally effective in creating a sense of unease.

Conclusion

Resident Evil 0 is an acquired taste, but fans of the series and survival horror enthusiasts will find much to appreciate. While it may not reach the heights of its predecessors, the game’s unique setting, atmospheric tension, and challenging gameplay make it a worthwhile revisit. If you’re looking for a nostalgic dose of old-school Resident Evil, or simply want to experience a lesser-known entry in the series, Resident Evil 0 HD Remaster is a solid choice.

For fans of the Resident Evil series, survival horror enthusiasts, and those looking for a nostalgic gaming experience.

Hardcore lovers of the original game might find it a bit lackluster to what the game used to be but in the end it's still a fair remake to the original game, that will please most the old school gamers that revisit it and will entertain (and show) new school gamers a bit of what Resident Evil used to be - now with a new washed face.

For those old guys, put the original soundtrack and you'll be teleported to the tension when you played the game as a kid.
