Synopsis:

The Aquatic Adventure of the Last Human is, as the name suggests an underwater metroidvania about the last living human exploring the submerged ruins of their civilization after millenia away in the desolation of space.

Set in a now frozen Earth and armed only with a mounted harpoon, torpedo, saw, and a pitifully slow spaceship/submarine hybrid the player invades the homes of the new denziens of Earth, brutally killing them for no apparent reason. All the while gaining silvers of information pertaining to the human race's demise and collecting shiny upgrades for your vessel.

Review:

Pros:
  • Sounds: The music is wonderfully done, and with the visuals it sets the game's atmosphere nicely. Though some of the more common tracks do get old after you've been to an area multiple times for backtracking or exploration, but the boss tracks all fit the mood and visuals of the bosses. The ambient sound and sounds of the bosses all make the bosses and environment feel alive.

  • Visuals: Both the backgrounds and foregrounds are stunning, and help sets the atmosphere of the game. Ruined buildings co-mingling with massive fish and stalks of seaweed or masses of coral help emphasize the feeling solitude and petiteness the game conveys. All the bosses look very nice (even if their fights aren't that great).

Cons:
  • Gameplay: While I'm sure many people think that metroidvanias are overdone, I'm personally indifferent to the game style, and I am usually a fan of SoTC-esque (only bosses) gameplay. However when most bosses have instant kill attacks that (due to how slow the ship is) can be incredibly difficult to avoid, when some are so easy that they are easily forgotten, and when the majority of fights devolve into kiting the boss around the arena taking potshots at it with a fully charged harpoon until it dies, I am not a fan of the gameplay style. As I said the ship is slow, making the treks between bosses or backtracking to find that upgrade/secret you missed a painful chore, I find this surprising for a game that encourages exploration. The non-harpoon weapons were not that useful in most stituations, apart from where they are used to clear paths or when you are forced to use them in battle, I found myself using the harpoon 90% of the time.

  • Technical Issues: The game was made using Game Maker: Studio, so the technical issues I have are most likely due to the engine's limitations, but I feel that the devs should have taken more steps in decreasing these issues. The biggest issue for me are vertex buffer crashes, which occur when (I assume) too many things are happening on screen, thankfully turning off particles fixes this (but not for the final boss, though the dev's fix to vertex buffer crashes worked it for me). Memory leaks, causing crashes and freezing also happen a fair amount, less occur with particles off. This last issue isn't game breaking, but I find it odd, either the game is periodically sped up (by around 150% or so) at random intervals or during most of my run of the game was slowed down. I found the game to much more fun during the sped up periods.

  • Story: The bits of exposition you find lying around the game's map (unless you're writing it all down) are difficult to follow, with no way to view holo-tapes you've previously found. Though with the simplicity of the game's story it barely matters, the story being the mash of two lazy tropes; "Humans destroyed the world, because climate change" and "Out of control AI destroys all humans, because they are the true cancer of the world". I realize that the deluxe edition has a digital booklet that provides more story, but I'm not keen on buying information that should already be in the base game.

Verdict:

Buy the game if you want a short experience that looks and sounds nice, but has little to give in any other department. Otherwise I'd give this one a pass.

Much like the earlier installments of the series, Civ V is a great way to waste away your meaningless life until you either pull the trigger or slowly decay into the vast nothingness! Don't forget the DLC too!

Early Access Review
Seemed like it was going to become a pretty sick game at first, then the devs went full ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ and everything fell apart. No stable updates since April 26 2014, there are unstable updates but as the name says they're unstable. Apparently there's a major update coming "soon" but with ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥'s track record I would expect it during the inevitable heat death of the universe and that's being optimistic.

Just like all Civilization games it's a great way to waste your worthless life, beacuse it's not like you'll actually achieve anything so just play video games.

10/10

So you look at this game's store page and you're like "This looks like a fun game, and it's free!" obviously you download it and start it up. You play a few games against bots and have fun, a few more against bots but with real people on your team. You're thinking "Wow this is a real fun team building game!" But you aren't ready to be up against real people you think, and after training for a while and getting over a hefty amount of hours played you think you're ready.

You put down your prefrences: US West Server, English speaking people only, and you hop into a game. After six minutes you find a game (finally!) and after loading into the game you see your teammates' names. Поток мастер 38, токсичный, Середина только, and Ваша мама. "Well those aren't English at all" you think, your enemies all have English names though. Anyway into the game you go, 3 of your teamates go middle, 1 goes bottom and you are at top, there is no courier by the way. The 3 at mid are arguing in some moon-rune language you don't understand and the one at bottom is afk. Within 10 minutes your team's T1 and T2 towers are gone, the enemies' towers aren't touched also Ваша мама has just abandoned for being afk and in a few short minutes the others will abandon leaving you to be killed multiple times. The people on the other team are saying "I feel bad for you son" and other such things.

After losing you try another game, thinking, hoping that this one will be different. It's not, so you try again and again, looking for a game where you aren't matched with terrible foreigners or where you win so quickly and easily it's boring. But you never do, and you can't quit now that you're too deep in. You've caught the bug, can't stop playing, you are devoted to finding that one game that isn't a disapointment, will you ever find it though? Probably not.

All things considered, it's a good game, and better than Rosetta Stone if you want to learn different languages! 10/10 would recommend.
