TLDR: (most of) the gameplay is great, but holy crap do I hate the characters.

I want to start this review off by saying I've never seen the movie this game was based on. I used to have some of the sets back in the early 2010's, and I even followed the tv show briefly.
The on-foot gameplay is really good, for a LEGO game the combat is really fluid and interesting, having different combos and special moves that reward the player for knowing how to chain very small inputs together makes for more interesting combat than the older lego game experience (Lego Star Wars 3, etc.), it feels satisfying to use the various tools you've acquired to wipe out hordes upon hordes of enemies. Like most LEGO games, this game has some genuinely fun puzzle aspects, each Ninja is a master of their respective elements, and I can only assume as I unlock more powers, I'd be able to complete more challenging and interesting puzzles.
Then the rail-shooter segment happened. Whoever thought that the bossfight with Garmadon on the first level should be a railshooter, interrupted by cutscenes every time you advance the battle phase, thank you, you've given me one of the least interesting combat encounters I've played in any game.
I would really love this game if it wasn't for the characters, and their extremely cringeworthy dialogue, and personalities. The old Ninjago TV Show (when i watched it) turned what were just toys, into interesting and nuanced characters, like Zane, who was a very quiet and emotionally distant character, even after the reveal he was a robot. In this game every level he's there or talking to you they can't seem to go 5 seconds without him saying some really stupid line relating to him being a robot. And I personally hate Kai, who was a generally a hotheaded character, who eventually learns how to work with the other ninja, and not be so self-minded. With Kai, in this game they decided to turn his levels of self-centered to the max, in the first level when Kai, and Cole are fighting a flying robot, and need to take it down, Cole says "We should build something." Kai proceeds to respond with "Yeah like a statue of me doing a really cool pose."
At the time of making this review I've only played for maybe an hour and a half or so, and I'm expecting the rest of the game to be much worse, if I even bother to finish it. but hey, I got it for free, so I might as well stick through it.
