Before starting, this game requires a lot of investment to get into, if that’s not for you then this isn’t a game for you.

Still here?
Black desert online starts off rough with limited in game things to teach you but once you get past that bump and start learning the lay of the land the game becomes a lot of fun.

Personally as a new player the first thing I would recommend doing is the main quest line up to Valencia, you don’t need to read the dialogue it’s trash, the reason you are doing it is because it throws free gear, pets, money, and contribution and energy points at you. Which are all vital to the game.

Of course you can be stupid like me and completely skip the main quest line because it’s optional but of course you an always come back to it.

This game relies on numbers, gearscore, energy, silver, and contribution points are all massive parts of the game and there are two paths you can take down this game. Grinding, and Lifeskiling.

We should talk about life lifeskilling first because I suck at it and don’t know much about it.

Lifeskilling is a more passive but interesting alternative to grinding which is a profession based system that includes a bunch of things such as gathering, fishing, processing, trading, bartering, sailing, alchemy, horse training and some others I probably missed. If that seems like a lot it’s because it is. Many of these skills can make you money on the central market, which is the main system players use to buy materials and gear. If you really want to go in depth in grinding there’s a 260 page guide on reddit.

The other thing, grinding is a very active process that relies on your gearscore and smarts, there’s plenty of areas to list that can make good money but let’s keep it this way, the combat in this game is amazing, it’s responsive and definitely one of the most immersive things of any mmo. Hell, some times it feels like your playing a fighting game instead of an mmo with how fluid combat is. But of course. There’s more depth to it then just that. Almost all areas. Especially grass beetles, Are highly contested areas that constantly see pvp. If you have a grind spot, chances are someone else is gonna be there. Grinding comes naturally with pvp, and you should expect to see it often.

Speaking of pvp, this game has some truly dedicated people to the pvp side of things, of course these are 1v1’s such as duels in battle arena or full on wars that guilds with up to a hundred people participate in. Which brings us to the next thing, although this game may seem single player progression at first, it’s necessarily the game and I would have never continued playing the game if I wasn’t in a great guild.

This reviews been a mess, at the time of writing this I have played 205 hours in the past two weeks.
Anyways. If you get this game, be prepared for a treat if you invest into it. Though investing in any game will give return really.

On my first startup it wasn’t to bad, played for a couple of hours and became a shinobi theif that could run at light speed, although my combat abilities were terrible, second play through I chose the nobodies play through and got my entire groups limbs ripped off by a mutant gorilla ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ in vain.
10/10 experience so far, will definitely continue playing.
