You say, “From its rivers, wine shall flow”
Is then the Supreme Paradise a tavern, so?
You say, “For every believer, two houris are given”
Is then the Supreme Paradise but a brothel, so?

Why would God, who promised us wine in Heaven,
Forbid it here on Earth — does that fit reason?
A drunken arab once struck Hamza’s camel astray,
So the Prophet forbade wine to the arabs that day.

And who shaped me with care and art, if not You?
Who wrote what I shall do, long before I knew?
If it is You who makes me sin — tell me then:
What is the meaning of this Heaven and Hell again?

Tell me, who has not broken Your “law,” be true?
What taste remains in a sinless life, tell me, too.
If You repay evil with evil, without end,
Then what difference remains between You and me, my Friend?
