“HO!”
-Ray when regaining health while looking at the screen for some reason

Thunder Ray is as over the top anime as they come with a light boxing motif, that unfortunately doesn’t crack it as a game.

X-Factor
Let’s get this out of the way immediately, this game looks amazing as its sense of style and aesthetic is unparalleled, not only thanks to the character design and drawing expertise behind it, but also everything else, from how the motion is conveyed, to the subtle but necessary screen effects like flashes, film grains and so on.

Gameplay
You have 4 buttons to punch and 4 to dodge, along with a way to charge your punches as well as a special attack that will deal massive damage once a bar is charged up.

Ray and the enemies take turns wailing on eachother as you’ll have to observe their windup

Story
Ray’s the undefeated earth champion so he’s beamed in outer space to participate to a galactic tournament to see who’s the strongest.

Downsides
There’s no difference between your attack buttons as they all do the same damage nor they are used to counter any specific attack or mechanic of the game, on top of that, enemies have an RNG chance to block your attacks, maybe you’ll hit them 5 times, maybe zero times, giving you no reward for predicting their combo string correctly.

Charge attacks are either useless as they do the same damage but in more time, or their mechanic is never explained.

There's a weird delay in the game, sometimes attacks and dodge come out immediately, other times not making uou unable to adjust to it as you could be dodging too early if you try to compensate or too late if you do not.

Many enemy attacks look similar to others in their kit who need different inputs to be defended against.

Later enemies are “on rails” meaning it’s always the same attack sequence, this doesn’t feel like a fight, it feels like marking checkboxes at specific times, and as enemies do more and more damage it’s trial and error where this checkbox paper will get shredded, and you’re told to restart because you didn’t memorize an attack you haven’t seen yet.

Voices seem either AI generated or only the lowest effort was put into them, please even if it’s cooky or outright bad I think real voices would’ve done the job better

Story is there but it’s not and ending it on a cliffhanger that will never see it completed nets this game further negative points.

Admission price is good on sale, aesthetic are amazing but as a game itself is really lacking, I didn’t enjoy it but maybe you can, I wish there was a middle ground between positive and negative, but as it stands Thunder Ray falls on the category of games I don’t recommend.

The characters move too quickly. Really unnecessarily fast, making the controls feel clunky and unresponsive. The game mechanics are uninspired and lack variety across the levels. The fixed camera position creates unnecessary difficulty, as everything in the level moves except for your character. While the portal mechanic sounds promising in theory, its implementation falls short. The levels themselves are expansive but feel empty and lack engaging elements. The lighting design is poor, making it difficult to see what's happening on screen and interfere your choices. The game advertises itself as a fast-paced platformer but the gameplay revolves around waiting to bubbles or green platforms to recharge. While I might finish the game but wouldn't recommend it to others. You'd be better off playing Celeste or checking out some Celeste modpacks.
