Excellent game. Challenging but fair. Less punishing than a run of the mill Souls-like. Combat is great, exploration is great. Inevitably going to be compared to Hollow Knight which I would say is very fair (with GRIME being more difficult). Overall highly recommend.

I would argue that this is a perfect game. You pay 20 bucks for roughly 15 hours of high quality gameplay, lovely artwork, excellent worldbuilding and a wonderful experience. It really feels like the devs knew exactly what they were going for an executed it perfectly. It doesn't have a ton of unnecessary bells and whistles that would have extended development time and, thus, driven up the cost. Purely a charming storyline through a gorgeous world with polished, genuinely fun gameplay.

Huge fan, highly recommend.

Early Access Review
A lot of fun already in its current state and even more potential as it moves through early access. Worth the money.

Small note to the devs: it would be great if you could back out of the item menu with the B button rather than having to his the menu button again. Its a hard habit to break from other games haha.

Very little time put in thus far, but having a lot of fun. Kinda thought it seemed like a faceroll game my first round, then I realized how effective counters and strategy can be. Looking forward to getting into it more.

Short version: Excellent game with beautiful artwork and atmosphere and extremely well executed combat. Biggest complaint: insanely sexualized female characters.

Pros:
  • Such. Good. Combat. Great variation of combat styles between different characters. Customizable without being overwhelming.
  • Atmosphere is excellent. Environments are excellent. Artwork is excellent.
  • Exploration was fresh and innovative. Excellent incentive to check every nook and cranny of a dungeon.
  • Many hours worth of content. Granted, I took my time a bit, but even if I hadn't I would've gotten a solid 50 hours out of this campaign.
  • Pacing was excellent. Progression was clear and rewarding.
  • Simple yet fantastic crafting system.

Cons:
  • Female characters were SO sexualized. Like ridiculously, cringe-worthily sexualized. Gully was the only female character whose appearance wasn't just silly -- she's a badass. I'm not saying a female character can't be attractive, but damn, give these women some proper armor and personalities that aren't completely centered around being sexually appealing.
  • Story was forgettable. Cutscenes were fun to watch because of the artwork and the voice acting was great, but the story itself wasn't fantastic. Not terrible by any means, just a bit achetypical.
  • No option to speed up movement or combat. Sometimes I avoided using attacks with animations just so I wouldn't have to watch a ten second clip that I had seen a hundred times.

Overall, this game was SO much fun. I highly recommend it.

Hob is a delightful gaming experience lovingly crafted and creatively executed. Exploration and puzzles steal the spotlight while combat actually work much better than I've come to expect in a game like this. Watch the world change around you and slowly discover the secrets necessary to save it.

This game is absolutely worth the time and money invested into it. The visuals are absolutely breathtaking as you watch the world transform around you. I found myself awestruck at the sheer imagination put into this universe at several points throughout playing. Creature, character, and especially environment design in Hob is truly something to marvel at.

Puzzles were relatively simple most of the time, but required quite a bit of exploring, which was rather fun. Jumping, grappling and warping around was very fluid and the intuitive mechanic of following the power lines was the perfect amount of instruction.

Combat was relatively standard for a little action RPG, which isn't a bad thing at all. Enemies were challenging at time (I played on "hard" on a scale of easy, normal, hard, very hard) and it felt like the perfect degree of challenge. Find schematics that you can use to unlock new abilities and upgrade your weapon for a more in depth experience -- but to be quite honest, you're not necessarily going to feel a huge difference.

The storyline of Hob was more of an implied world-building scenario rather than a narrative. Elements of the world unfolded and unveiled themselves to you and the background of the universe was more implicit than solidified, leaving it open to thought and deliberation. To me, this perfectly fit the tone of the game -- finding yourself in a universe full of otherworldly imagination.

I got 15 solid hours of gameplay before "beating" the campaign (of course there are always things that you miss that you can opt to go back and find if you so desire). I was very peased with this -- I was honestly expecting to get about half of that.

Overall, I highly recommend Hob to those looking for an explorative, imaginative, atmospheric experience. To those who favor combat and exciting gameplay over world building, maybe wait for a sale.
