Early Access Review

I have played this game for quite a few hours looking for an excuse to write a positive review. Sadly, Salt and Sacrifice is not a good game. If I wanted to compare it to Salt and Sanctuary, its predecessor, they wouldn’t even be in the same league. So I’m going to try to explain why this game is mediocre at best. It’s a metroidvania trying to be Monster Hunter, but it falls short. Boss fights are nothing more than a sad exercise in button mashing without much strategy, and almost all fights feel the same with little variation. The maps have a lot of verticality, which would make it interesting that you have to chase bosses to hunt them down, if it weren’t for the fact that absolutely any enemy (boss or mob) can send you flying with a simple attack and send you back in a rather frustrating way, if the fall doesn’t kill you. That is, if you haven’t found a trap in the middle of the map, which is there only to troll the player. One of the common mistakes that these types of games have is that they boast of having great difficulty when the reality is that their difficulty does not lie in their mechanics, but in the statistics of the enemies, which is quite frustrating. When I finished the game, I thought that a new run in NG+ mode would give me a new perspective, since the first run was too easy for me. However, I found that the enemies scale in power much more than my character can. This makes boss fights impossible in some cases where two or more bosses are in one part of the map and, in addition to the enemies that each one summons, there are also enemies from the map itself. If I can’t even see what’s happening on my screen, it’s not difficult, it’s unfair.

Salt and Sacrifice tries to be something new, but falls short and fails to shine in any of its aspects. The combat is decent, but there is nothing better than in Salt and Sanctuary. The lore, as always in these games, is cryptic enough that I didn’t even understand the story well, and it invites little exploration. The level design is decent. Overall, it’s a game that scores 5-6 out of 10. And if compared to Salt and Sanctuary, it’s a “don’t waste your money” out of 10.
