After a full playthrough of the main story and a couple rounds of the endless mode, I believe it's well worth playing.

What I liked

It took me at least 2 hours to finish the main story (without looking for secrets) and it's an absolute thrill ride from start to finish. The gameplay loop is fast, chaotic, and always leaves you guessing on a first time playthrough. Which synergizes greatly with the level design, which is for lack of a better word, linear (which is a VERY good thing for this style of game). Then once you're finished with the story and still want more, there's a robust endless mode with multiple maps to choose from.

What I'm impartial to

Story is serviceable, however I will say the cutscenes are lovely. Voice acting is hit or miss half the time (especially during some parts of the gameplay). But, the writing definitely makes up for it. The soundtrack has a few standouts (namely RaiseAnchor, He's The Law, Waters of The Outbound). Though some of the tracks can sound samey at times, which is not a bad thing .

What I didn't like

Mostly nitpicks, some of the levels go on for a little too long. Other than that I have no complaints.

Verdict

It's had a lot of fun with Captain Wayne, it's fast, robust, and best of all affordable. Scrounge up $10 and some change then give it a shot.

I personally enjoyed what I played so far but I have difficulty recommending this game in it's current state.

The story and setting is captivating so far (though of course VERY incomplete as of writing this review). My favorite areas in the game so far include a run down motel overrun with drug addicts and the abandoned train station being used as a drug transport hub.

The best way I can describe the gameplay is it feels like a blend of Cruelty Squad and Golden Eye 007. Cruelty Squad largely in terms of being able to prepare yourself before starting a mission (in this case, Gun, Melee, Armor, Mask, Consumable, and Special) as well as being able to take multiple routes or approaches to missions. The Golden Eye element largely stemming from how the missions themselves are structured, basically before the mission actually begins, you'll be shown a list of objectives (Required and optional) which you can refer back to at anytime during the level by pressing tab.

In terms of the sounds and visuals, it's dark and grimey. The game looks like a puppet combo game (Namely Power Drill Massacre) and I mean that in a very positive way, I wouldn't describe this game as "scary" but I can comfortably describe it more as "tense". Thankfully the music and ambience reinforces the tension quite well. When you're attempting to sneak around or take out a couple of enemies, you're accompanied with the sounds of the current environment; when you're dealing a large number of enemies however, the when the tunes kick in letting you know you're in deep.

Overall, I found this game to be enjoyable and I can't wait to see how this game's future unfolds.

After nearly 40~ hours can I recommend Psycho Patrol R?

To a normal person who casually enjoys video games?

Absolutely not.

To anyone that's familiar with Ville Kallio's work and has enjoyed Cruelty Squad?

I'd say give it a try (if possible), Psycho Patrol R shouldn't be compared to Cruelty Squad in a traditional sense as it falls into it's own unique gameplay loop and feel but there are some overlapping qualities.

Psycho Patrol R requires the player to be tenacious and willing to learn it's numerous mechanics and various environments and it isn't afraid to punish the player if they're being careless or unaware. You must learn to adapt to different enemies, obstacles, and your equipment in order to make meaningful progress in this game.

To those wondering, "Is this a walking sim?"

The answer to that is yes.

However, this game tells a unique and interesting story that will leave you with more questions than answers upon finishing it for the first time. Thankfully, some of those questions will be answered if you're willing to commit to more than one playthrough while looking for any details you may have missed.

Overall, I'd say it's well worth checking out if you're interested into a good story (it also ties into the developer's other games)
