This game is the model for how all RPG's should be developed. True choices, massive story impact, great writing, and intriguing characters make for a game that you could easily sink hundreds or even thousands of hours into. 4 decent to great DLC's add a lot of great items, interesting places to explore, and usually include a cast of fascinating characters (OWB). You can build your character to be absolutely whatever you want, from the most saintly good Samaritan, to the most evil callous butcher, or anything in between. Tons of weapon variety, and interesting unique weapons, make choosing a particular weapon extremely difficult. The neo old west theme is great, giving off some great vibes.

On a technical level, the game is terrible. It's improved over Fallout 3's engine, but has a lot of bugs, poor performance, and crashing. This is a result of the rushed development cycle (literally 9 months). Most of the effort went to writing and a good foundation, not polish. Fortunately, the game's massive and active modding community rectifies all the problems with the base game with unofficial patches, fixes, tickrate fixes, you name it. The mods don't stop there. There are plenty of model/texture mods that make the game go from looking quite dated to looking almost like a modern game. There's also tons of mods that add DLC sized quests with voice acting and their own lore. Tons of mods for new armors, weapons, locations, player homes, you name it, someone's modded it in. This greatly extends the replayability and longevity of the game, proven by it's still strong and loyal fanbase. Not common for a game that came out 14 years ago.

This game could be 60 dollars now and still offer more value than most AAA titles that come out now. As I speak it's on sale on Steam for just 8 dollars for the full game and all DLC, and can often be found on other websites for even less as part of bundles. This game is worth every penny.

The main quest is quite fun, allowing you to pick from 4 factions to rule the wasteland. Caesar's Legion, the neo-roman fascist state; the NCR, a supposedly benevolent democratic nation; Mr. House, a pre-war capitalist oligarch; or yourself. Each choice offers an interesting moral dilemma and you'll be thinking about the implications even after you turn the game off. New Vegas isn't just a great game, it's a work of art.
