I'll start by saying that this game has been critically recieved similarly to Invisible War, with fans proclaiming mediocrity while the game itself isn't as bad as many have claimed. Most of the criticisms against the game are aimed at things ancillary to the game rather than the game itself. Namely, the short and small-scale story arc (even though it only seems that way because the past games were relatively longer) and microtransactions (even though many players don't even realize they exist because they are placed in the menu and literally not mentioned anywhere else in the game). If these are turn offs for you, so be it, but you are missing out.

While it is relatively short, the story does set up an arc and resolves it. This ain't a Tell-Tale game, you don't play Deus Ex primarily for the story, you play it for the excellent gameplay. Speaking of the gameplay, the controls are tightened and improved from HR, the side quests are expertly crafted (seriously, if you do get this game, PLAY ALL THE SIDEQUESTS), and the game sports some of the best level design in the entire series.

The level design is by far the highlight of this game. Particularly the main city hub, Prague. Prague is only a couple blocks, but there is no much detail crammed into it, it feels like an actual place. You can go into the sewer system, into many buildings like apartments and the individual rooms in said apartments, and even into an entire multi story bank, all with minimal amount of loading.

DX:MD is a good game taken on its own terms. Don't go in expecting a grand scale globe trotting adventure like the past games.

An absolute tour de force of the adventure game genre. From it's unique noir/day of the dead setting to the Mayan deco art to Tim Schafer's witty dialogue to the jazz/swing/mariachi soundtrack, this game BLEEDS style in a way not many games do. Controls are greatly improved by the addition of mouse control in the RE, but classic tank controls remain an option. Developer commentary provides interesting insight as well as an excuse for veterans to revisit this classic.

A game that pushes the boundaries of what the video game medium is capable of to a degree unmatched to this very day. Play the damn thing.
