Dead Dreams breaks one of the fundamental rules of horror in that the status quo is the "scary" parts. It doesn't let you get attached to the characters before everything goes to ♥♥♥♥, it just throws you in the deel end and expects you to care. Additionally, every monster is faster than you, meaning if you make one pathing error, you immediately die. But, because the field of view is so small, you have no idea where you're supposed to go. The first monster has a scripted "death" caused by it catching you, but you can actually die before the scripted part, forcing you to redo it. Lastly, as a final subjective nitpick I suppose, when it comes to surreal monster designs there is a fine line between "scary" and "silly" and everything I encountered during my time with the game definitely fell into the latter category for me.
