I didn't really watch the trailers when going into this game, and from reading the game description, I felt like it wasn't going to be as emotional as To the Moon or Finding Paradise. For the most part, I was right. Impostor Factory executes its story very differently compared to other games in the Sigmund Corp series. My experience was more or less the same as watching a good episode of Black Mirror.

Overall, this game is good. The visuals have taken a step up, the story is powerful (albeit confusing at times), and the music is impressive. But I think the experimental storytelling just made it not as compelling as its predecessors. So if you were expecting another emotional joyride, then you may be disappointed.

Instead, make sure to play through the other games, and enjoy the questions that are answered with this game's story, as well as the new plot points it creates for future episodes to explore.

For an indie game, Oxenfree definitely has a story to tell and a theme that the player can easily understand: a coming of age story with supernatural elements. Nothing unique by itself, of course, but the way its executed is very creative.

TL;DR: A good indie game with creative mechanics but also some bad voice acting; get this game when it's on sale.

Pros:
  • Gameplay: Solid and creative; the way the radio mechanic is used reminds me of some sci-fi movies, but it's unique compared to any of the other games I've played. There were some bugs/softlocks during my first playthrough that took away from the experience, but these didn't occur too often and can be forgotten.
  • Audio: It's nothing that blew me away, but the music/sound effects are well-composed for the environment and tones. Nothing dramatic or out of place; everything fits well and transitions smoothly.
  • Visuals: This game looks like an indie game and had a visual style that stays consistent and modest. Supernatural effects seem to be in direct contrast to the normal environment, and it should. It adds to the effect of being supernatural.
  • Extra Features: The "behind-the-scenes" documentaries and other similar options seems like a nice personal touch. It makes you appreciate the developers, and since it doesn't happen too often within indie games, it's definitely a plus.

Meh:
  • Story: I won't spoil anything, but the story that is told doesn't seem outstanding or too emotional. There were some touching moments, but some key parts of the story were brought up in an awkward manner. I wish the story and the "journey" would have been longer. With such a short story compared to other games of Oxenfree's nature, the character development felt too direct or forced when working with the dialogue options.
  • Lasting Appeal: There are collectibles in the game, and I like how the supernatural elements of the story can persuade someone to play the game again. However, nothing particularly is goading me to play the game again. I might play Oxenfree again after taking a break from it for a while, and collect all the lore-related stuff and mess around with the different endings.
  • Characters: The characters of Oxenfree seem pretty basic, with their goals and attitude staying consistent throughout the story or whatever the story forces them into. Their development seems forced and unclear, especially when you reach the ending. It kind of makes you feel as you didn't understand how each character came to end up the way they do, except for the person you play as.

Cons:
  • Dialog Options: I understand that for a "coming-of-age" story, the player can choose to play however they want, and dialog options are great for that. However, there are way too many instances where players are given a dialog option that doesn't need to be said. Oftentimes, I skipped the dialog options/stayed silent simply because that seemed like the best option, because saying anything else wouldn't fit the situation at all or was another round of cringe voice acting.
  • Voice Acting: I appreciate the use of voice acting in an indie game, but either you should get it completely right or just don't include it at all. Unfortunately, the result is somewhere in the middle. Half of the time, the voice acting for each character is done very well and adds to the emotion and flow of each cutscene, but the other half is cringe or out of place. The tone of the main character's voice is inconsistent at many times (like when a character should be angry, scared, courageous, or optimistic, but isn't) and this can really detract from experiencing the story properly.

All in all, considering everything, it's a good short indie game that has some replayability. But you should get this game when it's on sale.

Before playing this game, I had expectations, theories, and some general idea of how certain characters would be unraveled. After my first playthrough, all of these expectations were blown away, and in a very good way.

This game is much like the style of the other games the developer has made, but it's clear to see that the presentation has been mostly polished and that the flow of the story is very different. But the true beauty of this game lies in it's music, it's themes, and it's cohesion.

The themes that are focused on in this game are distinct from the themes that are focused in To the Moon. Through the impressive score and expansive narration, Finding Paradise aims to intensify these themes to help remind us why they are significant to a person, as well as to create emotion and sympathy. This overall aim was executed beautifully, but then again, I am only basing off my opinion throught the fact that I played all of the other Freebird games. Speaking of which, for those who did play the other Freebird games, you'll find that Episode 2 is very unique from the other titles, but very much the same in that same regard.

Whether you have or have not played the other titles, you won't be disappointed experiencing this wonderful journey for a dying person.
