I spent almost a week playing and thinking about this game, and I was really happy the whole time. There have been so many great releases this year that I’m not sure it’ll win GOTY, but I do think it deserves to be a contender. The level design and boss design make it clear that a lot of thought went into them. The game had more depth than I expected, and I found myself constantly impressed as I played.

In an age where too many games drown you in self-indulgence right from the start, this one feels refreshingly straightforward — pure gameplay, confident and unpretentious. It’s got that raw, rugged “man’s game” kind of energy. Even without a sale, the price feels totally fair.

I played this game back in 2019 but completely dropped it — for a simple reason: the keyboard controls were just too uncomfortable. Playing it again on the Steam Deck really made me realize how much this game is meant to be played with a gamepad.

Now that I’ve finished it in one go on the Steam Deck, I can say it’s a fun and solid game. The story can feel a bit melodramatic at times, and some of the side missions are overly messy and complicated, but honestly, that might be part of the game’s charm.

At first, I felt like it glorified the yakuza, but by the end, it seemed more like a raw depiction of the struggles within a dirty, human world. I recommend it. I’m not sure if I’ll continue with the rest of the series — it’s quite a long ride — but the sense of action and impact in this game is truly amazing.

There’s definitely some fun here, and it has a fair amount of detail. However, the only real motivation for replaying it is unlocking new classes, and if that doesn’t resonate with you, the game can get boring quickly. I do want to give credit for the effort put into creating DLCs and pursuing variety.
Turn-based games can easily feel repetitive, and unfortunately, the story doesn’t do enough to support it — at some point, it stops feeling like a zombie survival game at all. Because of that, I think the regular price of around 15 dollars feels too expensive. Somewhere around 10-5 would be more reasonable.
