This game was always bad. Super floaty movement, small roster, inconsistent hit detection, poor character balance, mediocre art style, and no competitive or casual features that aren't present in other platform fighters.

I am only reviewing this game because Warner Brothers is now deciding to kill it off. While it is funny to see people complain about their money being wasted (as I believe their money was wasted when they initially bought the items), pulling the rug up from under gamers is still scummy.

For your time (and money) buy Rivals or Aether. Its a cross platform, platform fighter but also has a dedicated community, active developers, and a community workshop with limitless characters to play as.

I wish I could review a game as mid. (Valve, please fix.)

I went into this game essentially blind, only seeing a small amount of footage from act one and knowing it was a card game. Sadly, the visuals and the card game are not fully expanded upon, with the developers favoring a cheesy storyline that half-heartedly implements tropes from sCaRy video games of the 2010s.

Without spoiling the story or acts two and three, all I can review is the underlying gameplay. Sadly, the card game is underdeveloped. In act one, the shortcomings are balanced by the roguelike progression. However, after act one, the roguelike progression is replaced with countless gimmicks added to the card game. While adding new complexities (gimmicks) isn't inherently bad, Inscryption fails to entice the player with its changes. It is very obvious the developers were relying on the storytelling from act one to keep players interests, as the game peaks in difficulty during act one. Once you beat Leshy, you've mastered the game, every opponent in acts two and three feel like training dummies.

I kept progressing in hopes the story would redeem the gameplay . . . it did not.

For my money, I would buy Shovel Knight and get the King of Cards DLC. It has the Joustus mini-game with deeper gameplay than all of Inscryption.

Story + Art Style: (Spoilers)
I understand the real-world video clips were meant to be cheesy but they completely devalued the story for me. Every piece of footage kept reminding me of low effort YouTube videos titled like, "7 YOUTUBERS WHO FOUND SLENDERMAN IN REAL LIFE!!!!".

Also, I really liked the three card buddies you got in act one . . . but they were forgotten in acts two and three.

The art style from act one established the perfect setting to keep a player's attention, the switch to a 2D pixel style completely killed my immersion in the story.

The game returns to a first person perspective in act three, however the environment and game master are designed to be less intense. The very end of act three is the only part as close to act one in ambiance.

The game allowing me to navigate my file system and use my steam friends as the cards showed me how out of touch the writers were for this game. The game isn't clever in its attempts to break the fourth wall. Undertale did it better. Doki Doki Literature Club did it better. Metal Gear Solid from 1998 did it better.
