A slick and fast-paced traditional roguelike that demands your attention without feeling impenetrable. The core gameplay loop of finding and abusing synergies between your starting culture/class/deity, your powers, and your gear is incredibly engaging, bolstered by a relatively simple moveset that conceals a great deal of mechanical depth underneath. What really makes Path of Achra special, though, is the setting, placed right at the cradle of a Mesopotamia-inspired civilization, with an ancient, pre-biblical magickal mythos. The fragments of poetry and text scattered throughout the game and the inscrutable beasts you come across create a feeling of esoteric mystery, as if visiting Gobekli Tepe or translating cuneiform tablets for the first time---setting the scene for a long-forgotten age when humans still communed directly with divine beings and channeled the primal forces of nature. It's quite something, like catnip to someone like me whose favorite part of any given museum is the oldest one. I would recommend this game to anyone who likes traditional roguelikes, the rapid build customization of games like Hades or Tales of Maj-eyal, or has an interest in the aesthetics and mythology of the ancient world. If you're like me and enjoy all three, well, this might be the perfect game for you.
