Although the handling can be weird, this is likely the most visually appealing, solidly storied (albeit corny), best NFS game. I collected every collectible, beat every race, beat every spontaneous NPC race, and maxed out my entire garage of cars.

But it's unplayable for many people, because the controller support is broken. What kind of racing game doesn't properly support controller input? The issue is that the game overrides controller input with steering wheel input, while also assuming Dinput instead of Xinput for controllers that support Dinput, which the game doesn't properly handle.

EA still sells the game, hosts servers and online multiplayer for the game, but has left this near game-breaking bug unfixed for years (likely since its release on PC). EA should not be selling this game given the state that it is in. Don't buy this unless you're willing to jump through the hoops to fix the game yourself.
