(these are my experiences up until ending A, so far)
Fights with regular enemies are only seldom enjoyable, the games scripted sequences have a lot of spectacle, the game looks great and runs great, but boss fights and story are a huge letdown.

Fights with enemies are fun because its satisfying to mash a bunch of little robots around with heavy attacks that crowd control them, subsequently blasting them to pieces while they drop tons of loot. However, the combat system itself is really simplistic. The extent of the combat in this game is spamming light attack until you spam heavy attack, restart combo, and shoot when they're far away. It really does get boring after a while. You're also incentivized to buy lots of heals, so the game becomes way easier than it already is. I already have issues with the bossfights difficulty alone, which I will talk about in a second, but most of the time you're going to be stocking up on heals, and then button mashing through a fight. Its really nothing engaging or special.

Bossfights in general are just way too easy. Just glorified button mashing with a dodge mechanic that can be spammed to avoid almost every attack. Theres no skill to dodging anything in this game. The skill ceiling has been lowered so much that beating any boss in this game is not satisfying in any way. The bullet hell sequences are annoying, easy to evade, filler garbage to get you to stop beating the ever living crap out of a boss so the fight actually lasts long. Every bossfight in this game has so much spectacle but is a total bore to play, just let down after let down and the final boss was the cherry on top.

The devs here thought it would be so cinematic, and so friggin tuff, to have an explosion disable your abilities and make you walk at a snails pace while you're dodging these bullet hell sequences. The problem is that this goes on for like at least 5 straight minutes, and there are invisible walls everywhere. The moment you walk into one of those walls, you are dead and you have to redo this circus of a fight all over again. Just total crap. I'd go as far as to say it feels unfinished. Theres also an instance, during an earlier bossfight, where you have to just meander around while the boss refuses to fight you and spouts exposition, so if you accidentally die you have to sit through that all over again. It really feels like bad game design.

The writing is bad, too. The marvel villain antagonists, that are evil just because, become total annoyances with no real story or reasoning behind their actions. They're extremely surface level and an obvious mechanism to just further the plot and give the player something to fight. The philisophical questions this game has been praised for asking are total r/iam14andthisisdeep fluff. The final line of the first ending, before this game cuts to credits, is something along the lines of, "if machines have consciousness and emotions, what makes them so different from us". like wow, no ones ever thought of that one before. totally pretentious.

Im just so disappointed with this game, I hope that maybe I can find something to like about it if I ever feel like picking it up again and playing through the rest of the endings. So far its just been a huge letdown and I dont get what other people see in it.

9.5/10
(steamdeck release does not work, needs to be played on a PC with an external controller)

stayed up all night and finished the game in one sitting. absolute peak. some of the detective scenes are less entertaining than the ones in detroit beccome human, but what heavy rain actually does better than that game is its level of consistency. there was no character in this game that i dreaded playing (kara in detroit become human was particularly boring after her introductory chapter). this game didnt really feel like it had the branching narratives and sweeping changes to story that detroit has, it really felt more like a telltale game in terms of player choices. On a first playthough that doesnt really matter though, because the illusion is still there. Overall, this was genuinely one of the most entertaining games ive played in a long time. Such a fantastic detective/mystery drama.

it IS priced at $30 AND has a battle pass, which is out of character for Sloclap especially after sifu, BUT its still a ton of fun. totally worth the 30 imo, i just hope other people see it that way because if this game were to die i would shed a tear
