Early Access Review
Fantastic second entry for DF. Different than the first game, in many ways, and great fun in its own right. It's free to play, so no reason not to try it out. Go in expecting a learning curve, as with Df1, this game will not do much to teach you how to play, and it's quite likely you'll have to die a few times before you figure out what you're doing.

Early Access Review
Early Access - This game is coming along quite nicely, and even with the success of the Xcom games, we still have a bit of a lack of good turn based tacticals. This little gem looks like it will help fill in some of that missing roster. Combat so far feels pretty good, and even though it's not fully fleshed out yet, the faction system is a nice strategic touch. The film noir style is unique in the genre (as far as I've ever seen, anyway), and gives it a nice niche of its own to sit in. If you're a fan of Xcom, Xenonauts, Massive Chalice, and the like, or are eagerly awaiting Phoenix Point, this game will help satisfy your need for a different turn based tactics game, even in early access. I expect a lot of good things when it has a final release. It's also worth mentioning that the developer is very actively listening to players, and even asking them for specific experiences to help fine tune the progression. Definitely recommended, and no doubt, will recommend even more as it is finished. If you want to support indie devs who actually work hard and want to make something enjoyable, then consider grabbing it in EA, even if you don't wind up playing until release. It's important to support the little guy, and any turn based tactics fan should be able to find $12 worth of value here.

Update: You will see a lot of ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ and moaning of people giving kneejerk negative reviews based on some single ability change they don't like. Please ignore them. The fact that the devs are willing to break the meta is a GOOD thing. It would be so easy for games like this to become stale otherwise. They frequently revert changes within a week if they see they aren't fun or aren't having the intended effect. Too many people just don't want to put in any effort to learn new strategies, and immediately want to rip into devs for changing things. Look at Sheriff, they tried something new, it turned out too powerful, and it got changed back within the week. It's great to give feedback on changes like this to help with balance... giving a negative review over something like that is just ridiculous.
So I haven't played town of salem. My mmo guild would occasionally play Mafia while farming, and there's a few tabletops that I play that have similar elements (Shadows over Camelot, The Resistance). I absolutely love this game. I feel like having a conversion mechanic taking precedence over straight murder really adds a lot of depth. Most classes are fun, and useful at least some of the time, and it seems like devs are more than willing to tinker with the classes that aren't to give them a little more oomph. If you like Mafia-style games, I'd say this is one worth giving a shot. Playerbase is constantly growing, and even when slow with <300 on, games do not take long to find.

Full review will follow, after launch issues are resolved. Here's what you really need to know:

This is one of the most fun games I have played in all my long years of gaming. It is tense, it has really cinematic moments, and even when I get killed early, it doesn't feel painful. The gameplay is pretty solid. There are probably going to be a few frustrating moments where you are found with nothing on hand to help you survive. The shift/grab can feel a little cheap, but it IS dodgeable, most of the time, and there are other ways to mitigate it - such as firecrackers or pocketknives. For many, it is a learning curve issue. That being said, if it's a really good Jason, you are probably not going to dodge it, unless you have terrain to help. This is the most fun I have ever had in a multiplayer game since Starsiege: Tribes.

And the bad: Yes, there are server issues. There are database issues that are going to make it difficult to get in and play. This sucks a lot right now. This has also been the case in every single multiplayer launch I can remember, all the way back to WoW launch, and earlier. Patience is required. If you want to wait to buy the game until after launch troubles have passed, that is a fine idea.

Trying to trash review scores because of early *server* issues is petty and has nothing to do with how good or bad the game actually is.
