Dying Light: The Beast

A More Than Competent, Yet Disappointing Performance by Techland

Dying Light: The Beast returns to the Dying Light universe, picking up after the events of Dying Light 2, but it tries to tell a somewhat standalone story. While the narrative itself proves engaging, sadly The Beast struggles to keep up in the gameplay department.

It's important to understand that Dying Light: The Beast was originally supposed to be the second DLC for Dying Light 2, and viewed in that light, what we got makes perfect sense.

Sadly, the game ends up stuck halfway between expansion and standalone title, and it doesn't really manage to stick the landing for either.

There is a sorely felt lack of side content during the already somewhat short campaign, and while it all feels worthwhile, and Dying Light truly experiments with third-person detached camera shots in cutscenes for the first time. everything really does feel half-baked.

The new vehicle is fun to drive, but there's never much reason to do so outside of scripted sections. The "beast" mechanic is just another rage meter that often feels more annoying than rewarding, as it applies exaggerated effects on the screen when charged.

The story builds nicely into a potential DL3 that I don't doubt will be amazing when we finally get it.

The Beast is, in my opinion, the worst value proposition of the current Dying Light titles, and as such I'd probably recommend it at around the 30 EUR/USD mark.

It's the competent Techland we know, but with a limited scope, despite the full price.
