The fast pace and permanent nature of the decisions you make in the game pull you in and get you incredibly invested in your characters, that anything that happens to them as a result affect you deeply. There are moments when you will be begging the game to not let you have to make such a difficult choice, but you have to literally choose between evils. It's scarring. The storytelling and acting are authentic enough that they drag you under and never let you out until you complete the game, whatever the outcome. And when you do finish it, it's like waking from a dream. A very lucid dream.

The last game that hit me at this emotional level was The Last of Us, and Detroit hit harder.
